At a glance
- The villages are spread out, so renting a car or joining a tour is more efficient.
- Stratford has a clear literary theme, making it a good choice for families too.
- Keep a day trip manageable by choosing just 1–2 main villages.
- For a specific Cotswolds day trip by public transport, take bus 801 from Moreton-in-Marsh station to visit Stow-on-the-Wold and return. Decide whether to add Bourton-on-the-Water only after you’ve confirmed two return buses. Save Stratford-upon-Avon for another day.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
For a day trip from London, choose either Stratford-upon-Avon or a Cotswolds village. To visit both, check that your transport specifies the departure location and return time.
Walk around just one village with a confirmed rail arrival and connecting bus. Return to the station on a bus one departure before the last return bus.
After arriving by train, plan your town walk around the opening hours of one Shakespeare attraction, then return from the same station.
History and context
With its limestone villages and pastoral scenery, the Cotswolds is often seen as the quintessential English countryside.
Stratford links a literary figure’s birthplace and theater with a riverside town.

One of the Cotswolds’ best-known villages. It’s less crowded in the morning or late afternoon.

- A village pub lunch, cream tea, and bakery snacks make a good combination for a countryside outing.
- Day tours may allow little time for lunch, so bring a simple snack.

If you’re staying in London for 5 nights or more, it’s worth setting aside a day for the English countryside and a literary theme.
Reality check
For the Cotswolds, take a direct train from London Paddington to Moreton-in-Marsh, about 1 hour 35 minutes, then catch Pulhams bus 801 from outside the station toward Stow-on-the-Wold. Train and bus tickets are separate. If you choose Stratford, check rail routes from London Marylebone, including whether you need to change at Leamington Spa or elsewhere, and allow 2–3 hours each way. Stratford-upon-Avon station is about a 15-minute walk from the town center. No standard route combining both areas in one day is suggested.
Allow 9–11 hours for a round trip from your London accommodation to one Cotswolds village, and 3–4 hours in the village, including lunch. Don’t rely on the last bus as your only way back. Take a bus one departure earlier to Moreton station and arrive 30 minutes before your train. If the 801 timetable doesn’t work on your visit date, explore Moreton itself or choose a tour booked in advance.
If you choose a round trip to Stow-on-the-Wold in the Cotswolds, add together round-trip rail fares between London and Moreton-in-Marsh, round-trip bus 801 fares, and meals. If you choose Stratford-upon-Avon, add round-trip rail fares to Stratford, meals, and admission to any Shakespeare site you choose; don’t add bus 801. If your budget limit is £100, subtract the actual round-trip transport cost for your chosen area first, then use what remains for meals and admission. £100 is an example for budgeting, not a package price or a daily average. The basic budget does not include a taxi between the two areas.
Driving on country roads and parking in narrow village streets may feel unfamiliar. If you rent a car, allow extra time and don’t leave valuables inside.
If plans change
Instead of connecting several Cotswolds villages, make a round trip to just one place: Moreton-in-Marsh or Bourton-on-the-Water.
Walk along the river and visit the church in Stratford. If you don’t have performance tickets, don’t plan on a late return.
Small tip
It’s difficult to visit several villages using public transport alone. Factor in both transport costs and time at each stop.
Final check before departure
- Check the operating days and stops for local buses.
- Choose one paid attraction to visit in Stratford.
- Save a return train option that doesn’t depend on a taxi.
Shakespeare’s Birthplace has seasonal opening hours and a last admission time. Booking online in advance is recommended. On days that include literary attractions, lock in those times first. In the Cotswolds, take just one connecting bus from Moreton-in-Marsh and leave enough time for the return trip.
