Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
After you arrive and drop off your bags, spend 1–2 hours walking around the Royal Mile and St Giles’ Cathedral. If you arrive late, skip the castle rather than trying to squeeze it in, and finish with dinner at a pub.
Allow 2–3 hours for Edinburgh Castle, booked for the morning, and about 2 hours for the free National Museum of Scotland after lunch. If the weather is clear and you still have energy, add 45–60 minutes at Calton Hill.
Spend just 1 hour at a café near Victoria Street, then head to the station or airport. If you have a late departure and a suitable reservation, choose the Palace of Holyroodhouse instead of the museum.
History and context
Edinburgh Castle tells the story of the Kingdom of Scotland and its long-running tensions with England.
Compare the medieval lanes of the Old Town with the New Town, a planned city from the Age of Enlightenment.
Places and meals
The castle is the city’s landmark. Take in the views, military history, and traces of royal power.

If you can add 2 nights to a London trip, Edinburgh will give your UK visit a very different feel.
Reality check
You’ll need to take your suitcase over hills and cobbled streets between Waverley Station and your accommodation, so keep the trip short right after you arrive.
Day 2 is your only full sightseeing day in this 2-night, 3-day trip. For a flight out of the airport, allow about 1 hour for travel from the city, then add the amount of time your airline recommends arriving before departure and a 30-minute delay buffer to decide when to leave the city. Arthur’s Seat has a longer climb than Calton Hill, so leave it out of the default plan on departure day.
As of 2026-10-03, admission to Edinburgh Castle for adults (ages 16–64) was £23.50 online and £26 at the gate. Tickets can sell out, so book a date and time. General admission to the National Museum of Scotland is free, though special exhibitions may cost extra. Estimate your day’s spending by adding castle admission, a pub dinner budget of up to £25, and the actual quotes for lunch and transport. £25 is an example meal budget, not a menu price.
The Royal Mile can get crowded, as can pub areas at night, so it’s safer to carry your bag in front of you.
If plans change
Follow the Royal Mile to connect the National Museum with Calton Hill, and don’t buy unofficial castle tickets.
Skip Arthur’s Seat and Calton Hill, and switch to indoor options in the Old Town and the bus route to the Leith waterfront.
Small tip
There are lots of hills and cobbled streets, which make it awkward to move around with a suitcase. Prioritize easy access to Waverley Station when choosing accommodation.
Final check before departure
- Book a time slot for Edinburgh Castle.
- Check the wind speed on the hills and the sunset time.
- Save information on festival-period road closures and your return journey to the airport.
- Check opening hours and last entry on days you plan to visit the castle or museum. Add your reservation time to your calendar first so a long walk along the Royal Mile doesn’t make you miss a paid visit; fit your lane wandering around it.
Tickets for Edinburgh Castle can sell out early in summer, and additional tickets may not be available at the gate after online sales sell out. Book your castle time slot first. If tickets are unavailable, adjust your route to include the Royal Mile and the National Museum of Scotland. Also check the official website for temporary weather-related closures.
