At a glance
- Ephesus is a good fit for travelers who enjoy learning about ancient cities, with its street layout still visible on the ground.
- At Pamukkale, managing your entry time and route matters more than getting photos.
- It’s too far away for an easy day trip from Istanbul.
- To have 3 full days, arrive in Selçuk the night before and stay there, then spend the night in Selçuk on Day 1 and in Pamukkale on Day 2. If you count the day you arrive in İzmir as Day 1, add another day instead of cramming sightseeing and travel into the same day.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Leave your bags at your accommodation and spend 3–4 hours at Ephesus in the morning. Add the Ephesus Museum in Selçuk in the afternoon only if you still have energy, and check your transport for the next day.
Check the actual timetable for local trains from Selçuk station to Denizli, or book a bus departing from Selçuk or İzmir. After arriving in Denizli, connect to a minibus for Pamukkale from the bus terminal. Take it easy in the village for the rest of the day.
Allow 3–4 hours in the morning for Hierapolis and the permitted travertine areas. Pick up your bags from your accommodation, then leave for the Denizli bus terminal or your pre-booked airport transfer. If you have an early flight, don’t try to visit the sites the day before; add another night to your stay.

Three days in the west make sense if you want to add another history-focused route after Istanbul and Cappadocia.
Reality check
Ephesus is not right next to Selçuk station, so arrange a separate taxi or minibus from your accommodation to the southern entrance of the site. Use the times shown on the booking page for the Selçuk–Denizli train or bus, and allow 5–6 hours on travel day, including connections and waiting. Allow about 30 minutes plus time for the next departure for the minibus from Denizli bus terminal to Pamukkale. Denizli Çardak Airport (DNZ) is far from both the city and the site, so don’t assume you’ve reached the airport just because you’ve returned to the bus terminal.
Allow at least half a day to visit Ephesus; travel from Selçuk to Denizli/Pamukkale takes additional time. If you also want to visit the Selçuk Museum that day, first check the arrival time of the daytime connection.
Check separately what’s included with the standard Ephesus ticket, the extra Terrace Houses area, Selçuk Museum, and Pamukkale–Hierapolis ticket. Access and extra charges for the ancient pool are also separate. Add up 3 nights of accommodation (including the night before the trip), 1 intercity journey, local taxis and minibuses, and site admission fees to compare this trip with a stay only in Istanbul. Don’t rely on a package’s claim that site admission is included before checking ticket prices at the entrance.
The sites have uneven ground and strong sun. Wear shoes with good grip and bring water.
If plans change
Visit Ephesus early in the morning and shorten your time there, then spend the extra time at Selçuk Museum or resting at your accommodation.
Follow the boundaries protecting the travertines and visit the Hierapolis ruins without counting on paid access to the pool.
Small tip
There’s little shade at Ephesus on summer afternoons. Plan for a morning entry, a hat, and water.
Final check before departure
- Check summer opening hours for each site.
- Save the bus arrival point in Selçuk or Denizli.
- Bring water and a hat for areas with little shade.
- Check opening hours and entry requirements separately for Ephesus and Pamukkale. If you’ve booked long-distance transport or a tour, confirm the accommodation pickup and the actual time you’ll have at the sites. On hot days, leave time for shade breaks and to refill your water.
According to the official visitor information, the Ephesus Museum is open daily, but its opening and ticket office closing times are set. You can also check the official page for that day’s opening hours and night visit options at Hierapolis–Pamukkale. If the schedules don’t work together, don’t rush to fit in both sites; spend the time at Selçuk Museum or resting at your accommodation instead.
