At a glance
- Give Castle Hill, central Pest, and Szechenyi Thermal Bath separate days. That way, you won’t have to chase the Danube views every night. On a cruise evening, keep your riverside walk short and arrive at the boarding point 20–30 minutes early.
- Szentendre is a day trip on the H5 suburban railway from Batthyany Ter. If you only have a city transport pass, you’ll need an extra fare for the suburban section from Bekasmegyer to Szentendre. Allow 6–7 hours total: about 40 minutes each way by train, plus 4 hours in town, a meal, and time to get to the station.
- Pecs and Eger are not included in this basic 4-day itinerary. If you stay longer, check the actual stations and transfers for Budapest→Pecs or Eger on MÁV, and allow about 3 hours each way plus an overnight stay. Don’t combine a day trip out of town with an evening reservation.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Visit Buda Castle Hill, Pest’s Parliament and market, the baths, and the Danube at night in separate half-day blocks. Don’t schedule the cruise and baths for the same evening.
Save your outbound and return suburban train trips first, then spend 4–5 hours walking Szentendre’s main square, lanes, and Danube waterfront. Have dinner back in Budapest.
Only if you can add overnight stays, choose one direction: Pecs for its cultural heritage, or Eger for its castle and wine. Avoid a day trip from Budapest and back.
History and context
The city grew from the two sides of the Danube, with Castle Hill and the commercial center coming together to form today’s Budapest.
Thermal bath culture and imperial-era architecture both shape the cityscape.
The marks of war, communism, and the 1956 revolution are also an important part of Budapest’s history.
Places and meals
A signature viewpoint over the Danube and Pest from Castle Hill in Buda.
Google MapsAn iconic Budapest landmark known for its exterior and night views.
Google MapsAn option for a thermal bath experience. Check crowd levels and tickets.
Google MapsFood and restaurants
- Think of goulash as a meal in itself, not a light soup.
- The Central Market Hall is a good place to browse for snacks, souvenirs, and a simple meal.
- Ruin bars are a fun option for an evening out, but keep an eye on your belongings.
How to fit it in
Three days in Budapest are enough to see the highlights, and the city fits easily into a Central European itinerary.
Reality check
In Budapest, find Szechenyi Thermal Bath by the M1 Szechenyi Furdo station. For Szentendre, take the H5 from Batthyany Ter to its terminus. Check with BKK which sections are covered by a standard city ticket and where an extra suburban fare is needed. For trips outside the city, check the actual Budapest departure station on MÁV; don’t search only by the attraction’s name.
Set aside half a day to relax at the baths instead of squeezing them between sightseeing stops. Schedule riverside activities around sunset for the night views.
According to the official 2026 Szechenyi price list checked on 2026-10-03, a day ticket with locker access costs 13,200 HUF Monday–Thursday, 14,800 HUF Friday–Sunday, and 15,800 HUF on public holidays and during peak season. Fast-track entry is a separate product, and towels and slippers are not automatically included. For cruises, compare operators such as Legenda using the same date and check duration, boarding point, and whether meals or drinks are included. Add up the bath, cruise, H5 round trip and any extra fare, accommodation, and meals. Compare the total in HUF before converting to euros.
Be cautious on nighttime streets around the ruin bars and check taxi fares near tourist attractions. After an evening walk to see the city lights, return on well-lit main streets.
If plans change
Skip the trips to Pecs or Eger and stay overnight in Budapest. Visit somewhere you haven’t seen yet, such as Castle Hill or the City Park area.
Avoid the riverside and steep walk up to the castle at midday. Visit a museum that’s open, then consider going to the baths around sunset after checking the water temperature and how much time you’ll spend outdoors.
Small tip
Check the weather, crowds, and reservations before scheduling a night cruise and the baths. Don’t try to squeeze both into one day.
Final check before departure
- Check Szechenyi’s age limit of 14 and over, the applicable price for your visit date, and opening hours.
- Save the H5 round trip and the extra fare for travel beyond Bekasmegyer.
- Check the cruise operator’s actual boarding point, check-in time, and refund terms.
Checked the official Szechenyi Thermal Bath prices and terms as of 2026-10-03. Visitors under 14 are not allowed, so check your group’s ages first. If regional transport changes, keep your Budapest accommodation and check the first and return services again. Recheck bath opening hours, the cruise boarding point, and reservation change terms for your visit date.
