At a glance

  • Don’t automatically combine Szentendre and Visegrád in one day.
  • Cruises operate seasonally, so plan to return by train or bus as your default.
  • The hilltop castle takes more effort than a walk around town.
  • Plan to catch an earlier return service instead of relying on the last one.

Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

Before you go

First decide whether to visit only Szentendre or make it a longer day that includes Visegrád or Esztergom. This guide does not provide a fixed timetable linking all three places.

Option: Szentendre

Take the H5 from Batthyány tér to Szentendre. Check the day’s service and return options with BKK, then spend the day exploring the old town, walking along the river, and visiting one museum.

Extend your day into the Danube Bend

At Autóbusz-állomás beside Szentendre HÉV station, check MÁV routes in the 880–889 series toward Visegrád or Esztergom. Look up the stop for your chosen destination, access to the sights, and a return service to Budapest together. If the connections don’t work before you leave, visit Szentendre only and head back.

How to fit it in

This works well if you’re staying in Budapest for at least 4 nights and want to visit small towns along the Danube.

Reality check

Transport

The H5 runs from Batthyány tér to Szentendre. Budapest city transit tickets are valid only as far as Békásmegyer, so check for a separate suburban railway ticket or an applicable regional transit pass for the rest of the route. For buses to Visegrád or Esztergom, use the official route planner.

Time

Allow 5–6 hours for Szentendre alone. Adding either Visegrád or Esztergom makes it a full-day trip, including bus waits and the return journey. Visiting all three cities is not guaranteed within 10 hours; split the trip across days if connections are tight.

Cost

Citadel, museum, and boat fares may cost extra beyond your transit fare.

Safety

Wear shoes suited to riverside weather and the climb to the citadel. If you include Visegrád or Esztergom, aim for a return service by land earlier than the last one. If service stops after you have reached another town, check for an alternative to Budapest from where you are and look into accommodation.

If plans change

Cruise service suspended

If you learn before departure that boat service is suspended, make the round trip to Szentendre on the H5 and spend more time by the river. If you’re already in Visegrád or Esztergom, check MÁV overland return services from your current location.

If the hill is too much

Skip Visegrád and take your time at Szentendre’s museums, cafés, and riverside.

Small tip

If a boat is central to your plan, first confirm that it runs on your visit date and check the last departure. If it isn’t operating, switch to a train and bus combination.

Final check before departure

  • Check outbound and return services and construction with BKK and MÁV.
  • Check official operating dates and piers for cruises.
  • Choose one of the two cities that you most want to see.
  • If you plan to visit a museum in Szentendre or go inside the Visegrád citadel, check opening hours and last admission first. Before booking a boat or paid attraction, work out whether you can still return by land that day.

Actual H5 and MÁV timetables, construction notices, and cruise operations may change by departure date. Choose a cruise only when you have confirmed alternative transportation, and plan to take an earlier return service rather than the last one.
