At a glance

  • Mont-Saint-Michel is in Normandy, while Rennes and Saint-Malo are in Brittany. Adding Saint-Malo means a separate city transfer, so it is left out of this overnight itinerary.
  • Check tide and weather alerts and the shuttle service to the island. Never walk onto the tidal flats based on tide times alone; join an authorized guided tour instead.
  • If bus connections do not work on your visit date, do not force a round trip from Paris in one day. Compare dates for an overnight stay or tours that include transportation.

Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

Day 1 · Overnight near Mont-Saint-Michel

Paris-Montparnasse → TGV to Rennes → Keolis bus → bus terminal near the tourist information office → leave your bags at lodging near the La Caserne shuttle hub, which is within walking distance → take the shuttle toward the island and walk around the village. If your lodging is outside this area, check the round-trip transport and travel time between the bus terminal and your lodging separately before booking. Confirm the train and bus connections first.

Day 2 · The Abbey and Return Journey

Visit the abbey in the morning at your reserved time → collect your bags → take the Keolis bus to Rennes → take the TGV to Paris. Leave extra time in case of delays between the bus and train.

History and context

A Pilgrimage Island

Mont-Saint-Michel brings together medieval pilgrimage and monastic culture with a dramatic tidal landscape.

Fortress and Abbey

The site served as both a religious center and a defensive stronghold, with its ramparts and towering abbey still standing.

Places and meals

Abbaye du Mont-Saint-Michel

The heart of the island. There are many stairs, so save some energy before your visit.

Saint-Malo Intra-Muros

Do not include it in the standard two-day, one-night Mont Saint-Michel itinerary. To see the Saint-Malo ramparts as well, plan an extended itinerary with extra travel time and an additional overnight stay.

Food and restaurants

  • Mont-Saint-Michel is known for omelets and seafood, but compare prices and atmosphere before choosing where to eat.
  • A meal featuring Normandy cider and seafood is a good fit for the region.
On the island

An omelet is a local signature dish, but if you have an abbey entry time, prioritize your visit and shuttle back over waiting in a restaurant line.

Off the island

To save money, compare restaurants serving crêpes and seafood off the island with the options on the island. Choices can become very limited after the last transport service.

Saint-Malo

If you add Saint-Malo, plan a seafood dinner after a walk along the ramparts. Do not try to fit meals in both Mont-Saint-Michel and Saint-Malo into the same day.

How to fit it in

Getting to Mont-Saint-Michel takes a substantial part of the day, so it works best as an extension after you have seen the main sights in Paris.

Reality check

Transport

The official access guide lists the Paris-Montparnasse to Rennes TGV as taking about 2 hours. From the bus station connected to Rennes railway station, take a Keolis Armor bus to Mont-Saint-Michel. According to Keolis's 2026 information, the one-way ride takes about 1 hour 15 minutes, and seats are limited, so purchase tickets for both your outbound and return bus trips on your chosen dates first through the official booking page. You cannot buy a ticket on the bus. The bus ends near the tourist information center and free shuttle, not at the island entrance. On the return, allow at least 45 minutes between the bus's arrival time in Rennes and your TGV departure for walking to the railway station, finding the platform, and possible delays. Check each booking's terms to see whether the connection is guaranteed.

Time

Do not estimate your arrival time based only on the roughly 2-hour TGV ride. This overnight plan leaves the first afternoon free for travel, including getting across Paris to the station, transferring in Rennes, taking the bus, and reaching the island. Allow at least 2–3 hours the next day for the abbey visit and waiting in line, then add separate time to take the shuttle back from the island, pick up your bags at your lodging, and get to the Keolis bus terminal. Work backward from the shuttle and bus schedules for your visit date, then book your return bus. Allow 45 minutes for the TGV transfer in Rennes in addition to the time for travel to and from the island and lodging.

Cost

Add up the abbey admission, transportation, and lodging costs first, then compare restaurants on the island with those near your lodging. Going out of your way to Saint-Malo to save on food may cost more in transportation and time.

Safety

The tide can come in quickly. Stay on marked routes and check the last shuttle time in advance.

If plans change

If abbey tickets are sold out

Before paying for transportation or lodging, decide whether you are happy to walk around the village and ramparts or would rather change your visit date. Do not make an improvised trip to Saint-Malo just to fill the day.

If strong winds or heavy rain are forecast

Check local closures and booking change terms before setting out. If you have already arrived, follow access restrictions and spend less time on the exposed causeway in strong winds.

Small tip

Check the tides, abbey entry, the last bus to Rennes or Pontorson, and your train to Paris together. Even if the free Le Passeur shuttle runs late, that doesn’t mean onward transport to Paris will still be available.

Final check before departure

  • Check the abbey’s official visiting hours and closure notices.
  • Save your round-trip connections with SNCF and the local shuttle.
  • Check tide tables and strong-wind forecasts, and bring waterproof shoes.

Monastery hours, shuttle service, tides, and train connections vary by date. Leave plenty of time between the monastery’s official visiting hours and the last return service.
