At a glance
- Choose one nearby archipelago destination, Vaxholm, and save both your departure and return piers and ferry details. Aim for an earlier return ferry instead of relying on the last one.
- Make the Vasa Museum or the archipelago the focus of Day 2. If a ferry is canceled, don’t try to force a shorter island trip.
- For architecture and design, choose an institution with published exhibitions and hours, such as ArkDes on Skeppsholmen. On Day 3, first make sure you have time to collect your bags and get to your departure transport.
- If ferries aren’t running, visit ArkDes or Moderna Museet and take it easy in the city.
- On Waxholmsbolaget services between Strömkajen and Vaxholm, and within the designated nearby pier area, all SL tickets are valid year-round. This condition doesn’t apply to every archipelago ferry or private sightseeing boat. An adult SL 75-minute single ticket costs 43 kronor according to the official fare. You need a new ticket for the return after a meal or walk on the island, so two tickets cost 86 kronor round trip. If you already have a valid period pass, don’t buy a single ticket for a route it covers.
- Before departure, enter Strömkajen→Vaxholm and the return trip for the same date in Waxholmsbolaget’s journey planner. Save the actual boat, travel time, and pier details. Stops and seasonal services vary, so don’t assume a fixed travel time. Show your SL ticket when boarding and keep the paper ticket the crew gives you until you get off. If you can’t secure a return connection, switch to the Vasa Museum. Don’t assume an SL ticket is valid on a separate sightseeing boat such as Strömma.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Walk around Gamla Stan, then, if you’re interested, choose one open venue on Skeppsholmen: ArkDes or Moderna Museet.
If the weather and round-trip ferry schedule work, take a boat from Strömkajen to Vaxholm, explore the old town, and have lunch. Return on an earlier target ferry. If there’s no good connection or the weather is poor, skip the archipelago and spend the day at the Vasa Museum and Djurgården.
If you have time before departure, take a short walk to a viewpoint in Södermalm and stop at a café. Leave time first to collect your bags and travel from your accommodation to the airport or station.

Reality check
For an archipelago trip, first check a round trip from Stockholm’s Strömkajen to Vaxholm with Waxholmsbolaget. Strömkajen is the pier in front of the Grand Hôtel and Nationalmuseum. Stops and journey times vary by service, so save the round trip for your travel date. Use the SL app to plan connections between your accommodation and the city’s transit network.
Day 1: Gamla Stan and one indoor design venue. Day 2: the Vasa Museum or a round trip to Vaxholm. Day 3: a short walk in Södermalm before departure. Allow at least half a day for Vaxholm, including the boat trip, waiting, and lunch there. Don’t try to fit every museum into the same day.
Since museum admission and café prices add up in Stockholm, enjoy fika each day and balance your meals with stops at market halls.
The wind can be cold along waterfront paths and at viewpoints, so bring an outer layer. In winter, schedule outdoor activities in the morning.
If plans change
Stay in the city rather than trying to reach a different nearby island. Choose one venue—ArkDes, Moderna Museet, or the Vasa Museum—that is open on your visit date and has suitable tickets.
Skip the island and visit the Vasa Museum and parks on Djurgården instead. Don’t make evening plans that depend on catching the last return ferry.
Small tip
In winter, the sun sets early, so plan viewpoints and outdoor walks for the morning or early afternoon.
Final check before departure
- Check entry and departure details for Gamla Stan and the design venues.
- Save the ferry reservations and travel times you need for the archipelago.
- Check the last transit connection back to your accommodation after Södermalm.
Ferry services in the archipelago vary by season and date. Before departure, check Waxholmsbolaget for piers, the last ferry, and service notices, and choose one indoor place to visit if you skip the boat.
