At a glance
- Choose your cities with winter daylight and reduced archipelago ferry service in mind
- Confirm your three days in Stockholm first, then fit in either Uppsala or an archipelago trip without overlapping plans.
- Adding Gothenburg is a separate option that requires an overnight stay there. On your departure day, collect your bags from your Stockholm hotel and check the actual connection to the airport.
- If ferries are canceled, switch to a day trip to Uppsala by train
- For Uppsala, search for a round trip from Stockholm Central to Uppsala Central on SJ. SJ regional train tickets and combined SL/UL commuter train tickets are sold by different providers and cover different areas, so do not assume they are interchangeable. Allow time to walk from Uppsala Central to the cathedral and castle, and set a target return train. Do not assume an SL single ticket covers the entire trip to Uppsala.
- The basic 4-night, 5-day budget includes 4 nights in Stockholm, local transport, admission to selected places such as the Vasa Museum, and either a round trip to Uppsala or to Vaxholm. Adding Gothenburg means separately budgeting for a one-way train from Stockholm Central to Göteborg Central, a hotel there, and transport for your next departure. Make the final leg the actual connection to your departure terminal.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
On your first day, take a short walk around Gamla Stan depending on your arrival time. On the second day, visit the Vasa Museum and Djurgården. On the third, explore Södermalm and one design exhibition. Stay in Stockholm each night.
Choose a round trip by train to Uppsala if it is winter or ferry service is reduced. If round-trip ferry service works for your dates, choose nearby Vaxholm. Do not try to visit both in one day, and return to your Stockholm hotel.
For the basic plan, collect your bags in Stockholm and travel to the airport or your next city. If you want to visit Gothenburg, make this a travel day and add a separate overnight stay and sightseeing day there.
History and context
Stockholm’s layout still reflects its role as a Baltic trading city and the capital of a kingdom.
The Vasa Museum offers a concise story of a warship, royal power, and a technological failure.

Reality check
Stockholm is a city linked by islands and bridges, so mix metro and tram rides with walks. Add Uppsala as a day trip by train.
The pace is easier when you group sights by area, such as Gamla Stan and the Vasa Museum on one day, then Södermalm and cafés on another.
Dining out is expensive, so look for lunch specials and food halls. Treat fika as a break and snack rather than a meal.
Stockholm is a calm city where you mainly need to watch your belongings around the Central Station and busy nightlife areas. In winter, plan around the short daylight hours.
If plans change
If ferries are canceled, switch to a day trip to Uppsala by train
In heavy snow, spend the day at an indoor museum in the capital
Small tip
Museum hours can change by season, so check summer and winter schedules separately.
Final check before departure
- Check admission and departure details for your three days in Stockholm.
- Save the bookings and travel times needed for Uppsala or the archipelago.
- On a day you travel to Gothenburg or depart Sweden, collect your bags and check the actual transport from your hotel to the departure train station or airport. This is not a route back to your hotel after departure.
Museum hours in Stockholm and island ferry schedules depend on your visit date. Check the official Vasa Museum and Waxholmsbolaget websites, then choose either Uppsala or the archipelago.
