At a glance
- Connect the cathedral, university exteriors, and the banks of the Fyris River as your core route. Add one indoor stop only if it is open and the price works for you.
- If you learn before departure that trains are suspended, stay in Stockholm. If you have already reached Uppsala, prioritize the operator’s official replacement transport and a return to your accommodation.
- The royal burial mounds and museum at Gamla Uppsala require a separate bus ride, so they are not part of this walking route.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Check your local train’s departure station and service, and whether sightseeing access to the cathedral is available. If a lengthy suspension has been announced, switch to an open museum in Stockholm and check the change conditions for your Uppsala ticket.
Walk in this order: Uppsala Central → cathedral → university main building and library area → lunch → Fyris River. If an event limits access to the cathedral, see the exterior and choose just one open indoor stop.
Get back to Uppsala Central 20–30 minutes before your target train. If you learn about a delay locally, check the operator’s replacement train or bus information and make your way back; don’t describe the visit as canceled. Leave plenty of time before evening plans, and don’t rush to add another reservation.

Reality check
Use the official SJ or Mälartåg search to look up local trains from Stockholm Central to Uppsala Central for your visit date. Uppsala University’s official directions give about 40 minutes; check the actual journey time for your train and add time separately for getting from your accommodation to the station and waiting at the platform. SL commuter trains may leave from Stockholm City, and their journey time and ticket zones differ, so don’t assume they are the same 40-minute train. From Uppsala Central, allow 15–20 minutes to walk across the river to the cathedral, then another 10–15 minutes from the cathedral to the university main building and library area. Gamla Uppsala, where the burial mounds are, is in a separate area from the old town on this walking route, so it is left out of the basic plan.
Set aside 6–7 hours: about 1 hour 20 minutes for the round-trip local train, 1 hour for boarding waits and station access, 3 hours for the cathedral and university area, and 1 hour for lunch. Distinguish a half-day of walking in Uppsala from a full day including travel. In winter, take a morning train, walk by the river during daylight, and arrive at the station 20–30 minutes before your return reservation or target train.
Compare the round-trip total and change conditions by entering your actual date, train, passenger ages, and group size on SJ or Mälartåg. Don’t assume an SL city travel pass automatically covers Uppsala. General admission to the cathedral is free according to its official visitor information, but sightseeing access may be restricted during services or events. Check visit-date tickets for the Treasury, guided tours, and special exhibitions at university museums; these are separate from a free walk. The basic budget covers round-trip train fare, lunch and fika, and one optional indoor stop; transport and café costs alone won’t cover every paid attraction.
Winter days are short, so traveling in the morning is more reliable than planning an outdoor walk late in the afternoon.
If plans change
Stay in Stockholm and visit Gamla Stan and one open museum. If you are already in Uppsala, check the official replacement transport from SJ or Mälartåg and wait near the station to return.
If you haven’t left yet, cancel the day trip and stick to an indoor stop near your accommodation. If you are already there, skip the riverside and stair walks, head to an open indoor venue or the station, and check the operator’s return travel notices.
Small tip
Check the train timetable first, then plan around the cathedral’s opening hours to avoid a wasted trip.
Final check before departure
- Check Uppsala Cathedral’s event schedule and the actual opening days of the university museums.
- Save any reservations and travel times needed for the old town and one museum.
- Check the last transit service back to your accommodation after returning to Stockholm.
Sightseeing access to the cathedral may vary depending on services and events. Check the official information for your visit date, and confirm the actual departure time and service notices with SJ again before you travel.
