At a glance

  • Visit St. Mark’s and Rialto at different times of day to avoid the busiest crowds.
  • Add Murano or Burano only if you have time for a longer stay.
  • Half a day to a full day is enough to see Verona’s highlights.
  • Spend 2 nights in Venice, then travel to Verona on Day 3. If you’re flying out of Venice Airport that same day, move Verona to a Day 2 excursion or skip it. Don’t make the long round trip from Verona to Venice Airport your default plan on departure day.

Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

Day 1

Group St. Mark’s Square and the Doge’s Palace during time slots available for official booking, then continue on foot to Rialto and a bacaro for dinner.

Day 2

Spend the day on the main island, visiting the Accademia and Dorsoduro. Visit an island only if ACTV round-trip times work for your schedule and the tides allow it; choose either Murano or Burano.

Day 3

If your train to Verona, your onward accommodation, and your departure airport are confirmed, store your luggage and visit the Arena and Old Town. If you choose a round-trip day trip from Venice to Verona, secure your return train first. If a delay or cancellation leaves too little time for the return, switch to an itinerary on Venice’s main island. If you have a booking in Verona or onward travel from there, don’t end the day by staying in Venice; first check alternative trains, refund terms, and what time you could reach your accommodation.

How to fit it in

Staying overnight lets you experience Venice in the morning and at night. Plan on at least 1 night rather than a day trip.

Reality check

Transport

The station on the main island is Venezia Santa Lucia; the mainland station is Venezia Mestre. Search for trains to Verona Porta Nuova. Fast trains take about 1 hour to 1 hour 30 minutes one way; add time to reach the stations. From Verona station, it’s about a 25-minute walk to the Arena, or you can take a local bus. To finish in Verona on Day 3, plan your next accommodation or departure airport near Verona, and check luggage storage conditions at the station before bringing large bags.

Time

Avoid the busiest hours at St. Mark’s and Rialto by visiting in the morning or evening. A day is enough to see Verona’s highlights.

Cost

As checked on 2026-10-03, an ACTV standard water-bus ticket costs €9.50 for 75 minutes, and the 1-day Venezia Daily Pass costs €25. If your journeys require three separate 75-minute tickets, the total is €28.50, so compare that with the 1-day pass. Check excluded services, such as airport connections and Alilaguna, separately. Venice’s day-trip access fee has specific applicable dates and exemption rules; check the official portal to see whether overnight guests need to register for an exemption. Verona train fares and Arena tickets are not included in ACTV passes. ACTV fares and heritage-site admission are separate costs; include meals and accommodation in your total budget too.

Safety

Bridges, boat landings, and wet walkways in Venice can be slippery. Hold the handrail, and don’t rush while pulling large bags. Watch for pickpockets in tourist queues and on water buses; carry your bag in front of you. Save your accommodation and boat landing locations in advance for the trip back at night.

If plans change

Alternative if the tide is high in Venice

Put off visiting the low-lying St. Mark’s Square and walk along higher routes in Cannaregio and through indoor spaces that are open.

Alternative if your train to Verona is delayed

If you’re taking a round-trip day trip from Venice to Verona, cancel the round trip and spend more time in one area of Venice’s main island. If you have accommodation in Verona or onward transport booked, check alternative services and refund terms with the operator, and let your accommodation know you may arrive late. Stay in Venice only if you can adjust your later bookings.

Small tip

Choose a water-bus pass based on how often you’ll travel and where you’re staying.

Final check before departure

  • Plan your visit around the Doge’s Palace’s official admission times, and schedule your ACTV island round trip for a different day.
  • Check trains for your travel date on Trenitalia. If you’re staying in Verona or continuing to another city, secure your one-way train and onward transport first. For a round-trip day trip from Venice to Verona, secure your round-trip trains first.
  • Check the Verona Arena’s opening days and last admission on its official page.
  • Check opening hours and closure days for the Arena and the Doge’s Palace separately. If areas are closed to visitors during performance setup, don’t force the schedule; spend more time walking around the same city instead.

For Venice, check ACTV service and tide levels. For travel to Verona, check Trenitalia’s schedule for your travel date. Review the official visitor requirements for St. Mark’s Basilica and the Doge’s Palace separately, then decide what to book first.
