At a glance
- On day one, get to know the village and area around the station after arriving in Zermatt. Save a clear morning the next day for a viewpoint.
- Choose either Gornergrat or Sunnegga as your main destination. If the weather is poor, switch to a village walk and museum visit.
- If you’re driving, don’t drive into Zermatt. Leave your car at an official parking facility in Täsch, such as Matterhorn Terminal. The shuttle train from Täsch to Zermatt takes about 12 minutes and usually runs every 20 minutes, so factor in parking, shuttle tickets, and getting your luggage to your accommodation.
- Leave time to try for a view again on your last day, but don’t wait so long that you miss your departure train.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Arrive in Zermatt - Walk around the village - Check Matterhorn viewpoints
If you choose Gornergrat, take in the summit views, then ride the train down from the same station and have dinner in town. If you choose Sunnegga, take a short walk around Leisee from the station, then ride the funicular down. Add Findlerweg only if you have checked the starting point, endpoint, return transport, and last service; it is a separate, intermediate downhill hike.
If clouds kept you from seeing a viewpoint on an earlier day, work backward from your departure train time and visit just one place. Allow about 66 minutes for the Gornergrat round-trip train ride plus at least 1 hour for viewing and waiting; for Sunnegga, allow about 9 minutes for the round-trip funicular ride plus at least 1 hour for viewing and waiting. Skip the viewpoint if you cannot get back to Zermatt station at least 1 hour before the next train departs.

Reality check
Regular cars are not allowed in Zermatt. If you’re driving, park in Täsch and take the shuttle train, which takes about 12 minutes. Check whether you can walk from Zermatt station to your accommodation or arrange a pickup.
Use a clear morning for either Gornergrat or Sunnegga, and save village walks and museums for cloudy periods. A short out-and-back to the area around Leisee from Sunnegga is very different in effort from the moderate T2 Findlerweg hike (3.9 km, 615 m descent); don’t group them together as equally easy walks.
The official 2026 adult round-trip base fare from Zermatt to Gornergrat is CHF 132 from May through October and CHF 102 from November through the following April. The Zermatt–Sunnegga fare is CHF 26, CHF 30, or CHF 33, depending on the season. Eligible holders of a Swiss Half Fare Card, Swiss Travel Pass, or similar pass may get 50% off regular round-trip tickets, subject to each operator’s terms. If you plan to return from Riffelberg instead of Gornergrat, compare the round-trip ticket for that segment with the round-trip ticket to the summit using the official fare schedule. Check the final amount on the payment screen for your visit date after reviewing the webcams and operating conditions.
Walk slowly at high altitude and drink water often. If the weather worsens during a hike, head down without hesitation.
If plans change
On a day when clouds obscure only the views, put off the expensive viewpoint and choose a museum in town or a lower walking trail that is officially open. Gorner Gorge is a seasonal attraction operating from May 23 through October 31, 2026, so visit only if it is confirmed open that day and the trail conditions are suitable. If rain or snow makes walking dangerous, or the gorge is closed, switch to a museum.
Choose just one: a Sunnegga round trip or a round trip to Riffelberg on the Gornergrat route. If you are not going to the Gornergrat summit, select a round-trip ticket with Riffelberg as the destination, and check operating conditions and fares for your visit date.
Small tip
Mountain trains are expensive, so check the viewpoint webcams and forecast before deciding whether to go up that day.
Final check before departure
- Check official service updates, webcams, and wind conditions at different elevations.
- Plan how to get your luggage from your accommodation to the station.
- Save the last downhill departure time and decide when to stop if you develop symptoms of altitude sickness.
Operating hours for Zermatt’s mountain railways, cable cars, and hiking routes can change due to wind, snow, or maintenance, and reserved departures may sell out. Buy a mountain pass only after checking the views and service status.
