At a glance
- Don’t finalize mountain-view plans as soon as you arrive. Keep room to move them earlier or later based on the forecast.
- Compare rail passes based on the routes you’ll actually take, not on how much you think you might travel. In 2026, the Swiss Travel Pass costs CHF 254 for 3 days, CHF 309 for 4 days, and CHF 439 for 8 days in second class. Mountain routes such as Jungfraujoch receive only a 25% discount.
- City stays and mountain village stays differ in first and last train times as well as price.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Save the next day’s first journey and mountain route on Swiss Federal Railways (SBB), then compare forecasts at different elevations on MeteoSwiss.
Start with the routes most affected by weather, such as scenic trains and cable cars.
Switch to plans that work under cloud cover, such as lakeside cities, museums, or thermal baths.
How to fit it in
Use Lucerne or Interlaken as a base, and take mountain transport on the day with the better weather.
Reality check
Intercity trains, mountain railways, and cable cars may have different operators and discount rules. Check each mode of transport and any replacement services for construction on the SBB route planner.
Allow at least 10–20 minutes for each transfer and 1–2 hours to wait out mountain weather. Don’t plan two different mountains in one day.
Don’t compare only pass prices. Add up the regular and discounted fares for your confirmed long-distance and mountain routes. Seat reservations and cable cars may cost extra.
Don’t go up a ridge if the mountain forecast is poor or facilities are closed. Pack warm and waterproof layers and water for changing elevations.
If plans change
Skip the viewpoint ticket and switch to lakeside walks and museums in Lucerne, Bern, or Zurich.
Keep just one mountain excursion and spend another day at the same accommodation, enjoying free old-town and lakeside walks.
Small tip
A peak-season round trip to Jungfraujoch costs around CHF 260 from Interlaken, and seat reservations are required from May to October (CHF 10 round trip). Viewpoint services and mountain weather can change, so recalculate shortly before departure.
Final check before departure
- Save your actual routes on SBB and compare the total cost of a pass with point-to-point tickets.
- Check MeteoSwiss forecasts for precipitation, wind, and visibility at different elevations.
- Check mountain facility operating notices and the last descent time.
Mountain transport hours, construction, weather closures, and discounts vary by route and date. Check SBB and each mountain facility’s notices on the day of travel.
