At a glance

  • Staying near Gangneung Station or downtown makes it easier to collect your bags and catch your train on departure day. A coastal stay makes it easier to walk by the sea in the morning and evening. Factor in whether you’ll need to return to the beach to pick up bags after checkout.
  • Gyeongpo Lake and Gyeongpo Beach are on different shores. Rather than circling the entire lake and walking the beach, see one stretch of the lake near your stop, then continue to the beach. At Anmok, combine coffee with a seaside walk.
  • Weekend traffic on coastal roads can affect buses and taxis. If your train is coming up, leave the beach you’re at early instead of adding Sacheonjin. One fewer trip between beaches also means a lower taxi fare.

Time between arrival and your return

How to split up your day

This example assumes you arrive by train and stay one night. For a day trip, don’t combine both days; choose just one area, either Anmok or Gyeongpo.

Day 1 · Anmok

Gangneung Station → drop off your bags → Anmok Beach and Coffee Street → meal → accommodation

대중교통

Allow extra time for bus waits and boarding on the round trip, and set aside 2–3 hours at the beach.

Day 2 · Gyeongpo and Gangmun

Accommodation → one stretch of Gyeongpo Lake → Gyeongpo or Gangmun Beach → pick up your bags → Gangneung Station

대중교통

If you want to visit Sacheonjin, leave out part of this route. Don’t let your return to the station overlap with your bag pickup.

Food and restaurants

  • Anmok has plenty of cafés to choose from. Decide whether to wait for a seat with an ocean view or walk along the beach first. On a day heading north to Gyeongpo or Sacheonjin, check the map to see whether your restaurant is near your target beach; this can save you from backtracking for a meal. Check individual businesses’ hours on the day.

How to fit it in

If you have one day, choose either Anmok or Gyeongpo from Gangneung Station, then add a meal in the city. With two days, explore Anmok and Songjeong on the first day, then Gyeongpo and Gangmun on the second. Add northern Sacheonjin only if you have extra time on day two, and avoid planning to walk the entire coast.

Reality check

Transport

For a bus trip, it’s easiest to make a round trip from Gangneung Station to one coastal area. Check routes, stops, and arrival information on the Gangneung City Bus Information System. Even if you take a taxi there, don’t assume you’ll be able to get one right away for the return. For northern beaches such as Sacheonjin, look up the round-trip route before deciding to go.

Time

Allow 2–3 hours for coffee and a walk at Anmok, and half a day for one stretch of the lake, the beach, and a meal at Gyeongpo. These are planning estimates for time spent at the destinations. Aim to reach the station 1 hour before your train so you have time to collect your bags and absorb traffic delays. If the route takes longer, leave the beach earlier.

Cost

For a trip centered on seaside walks, transportation, meals, and coffee will make up most of your spending. If you visit two cafés, budget for the taxi ride between them as well as two drinks. If two people are splitting a taxi, compare half the app’s estimated round-trip fare with the cost of round-trip bus tickets. Beach parking is separate from parking at your accommodation; check the rate and hours for the specific lot.

Safety

Stay off breakwaters and wet rocks when waves are high. Walking and swimming are separate activities; don’t enter the water when access is restricted. Strong sea breezes can make the lakeside feel cold too, so bring an outer layer. At night, return on a well-lit path.

If plans change

If it rains

Skip the trip to Sacheonjin and choose either Ojukheon or an indoor exhibition downtown, followed by a meal. Check closures and last admission times before choosing an indoor venue.

If the bus wait is long

Stay in your current area and have your meal there instead of heading to another beach. If the return bus doesn’t line up with your train, compare the taxi option to avoid making several taxi trips.

Small tip

Search for bus stops near the specific café or accommodation you’re visiting, rather than searching by beach name. Stops with the same name across the street may serve the opposite direction. Pick a bus for the return to Gangneung Station, and check the estimated taxi fare in an app in case the wait is long.

Final check before departure

  • Book your arrival and departure trains first, then ask your accommodation how long it can hold your bags.
  • Choose an area—Anmok, Gyeongpo, or Sacheonjin—and save the stops in both directions and the return bus information.
  • Check for strong winds, high waves, and beach restrictions. Confirm opening hours and admission prices for an indoor backup venue in case of rain.

Coastal bus service and beach access restrictions vary with weather and season.
