At a glance

  • On day one, leave your bags at your hotel and take a 60–90-minute walk on flat paths along the harbor. Pack water, snacks, and an offline map for the next day’s hike, and don’t add the Peak or another district late in the evening. If you arrive late in the afternoon, skip the harbor walk and keep the evening to dinner and rest.
  • On day two, take bus 9 from the bus terminal by Exit A2 of Shau Kei Wan Station to To Tei Wan. The standard Dragon’s Back route is 8 km and takes about 4 hours, ending at Big Wave Bay. Leave the day open for the hike, hotel transfers, waiting for buses, and rest; return on bus 9 from Big Wave Bay Road. Shek O Beach is not the same bus terminus.
  • If you choose Lamma Island for day three, take a ferry from Central Pier 4 to Yung Shue Wan, explore the village, and return to the same pier for a shorter outing. Crossing the island to Sok Kwu Wan adds hilly walking and a different return timetable. Save both HKKF route schedules separately and leave enough time in your plan in case you miss a ferry.
  • If you choose Lantau, plan the Ngong Ping cable car from Tung Chung and sightseeing at the arrival point as one outing. Check for maintenance and closure dates before booking, and decide whether you’ll switch to a bus or rest in the city if the cable car is out of service. This itinerary does not combine Lamma Island and Ngong Ping on the same day.
  • On day four, take a walk near your hotel only if you have a late departure. If you want to see West Kowloon but your hotel and luggage storage are far away, skip it. Work backward from the airline’s recommended airport arrival time, allowing time to collect your bags, get to the airport, and handle delays, to find your latest sightseeing end time.

Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

Day 1

Flat walk along Victoria Harbour after arrival

Day 2

To Tei Wan → Dragon’s Back → Big Wave Bay → take bus 9 from Big Wave Bay Road to Shau Kei Wan. Indoor city alternative in bad weather

Day 3

Choose either Ngong Ping and the Big Buddha on Lantau or Lamma Island. If you’re tired from the day before, switch to a city rest day

Day 4

Late departure: West Kowloon Park → collect bags → airport. Early departure: hotel → airport

How to fit it in

Check the weather warnings and trail conditions on the morning of day two before setting out. If there’s a warning, strong wind, or heavy rain, cancel both the hike and beach visit and switch to a restful indoor plan with less travel. Skip the island crossing on day three if you’re still tired from the day before.

Reality check

Transport

The itinerary has two consecutive days of activities outside the city. If you’re still tired after the hike, make day three a city rest day. Don’t combine Lantau and Lamma Island on the same day, and check the last return service for your chosen destination first.

Time

Allow 6–8 hours for the hike day, including travel, and 4–6 hours for a round trip to an island village. Plan the Lamma Island crossing or Ngong Ping as a longer day on its own. These are sample itinerary estimates; actual service schedules and your fitness level will affect them. When planning your last day, finalize your airport transportation first.

Cost

For the hike, focus your budget on round-trip MTR and bus fares, water, meals, and emergency transportation. For Lamma Island, add the ferry fare for each leg based on your departure and return piers. For Ngong Ping, compare the official booking total based on cabin type and whether you choose a one-way or round-trip ticket. Read the cancellation and date-change terms before booking outdoor activities.

Safety

Cancel outings outside the city during extreme heat, thunderstorms, typhoons, or after sunset on the trails.

If plans change

Switch to an indoor cultural activity and use your one remaining clear day for a nature outing.

A Nature-Focused 3-Night, 4-Day Hong Kong Itinerary: If Your Legs Are Tired

Skip the ridge hike if stairs and long walks are difficult. On a day with no weather warnings, choose a short walk, such as the lower paths in Hong Kong Park. If there are warnings, rest indoors near your hotel.

Small tip

Because there are limited transportation alternatives for nature outings, schedule them mid-trip rather than on your last day.

Final check before departure

  • Make a weather backup plan for each day
  • Save the ferry and cable car operating links
  • Prepare water, a power bank, and a plan to return before sunset

Checked the Tourism Board’s hiking guidance and HKKF’s Lamma Island routes on October 3, 2026. Ferry and cable car operating hours vary by day of the week, maintenance, and weather. If service is suspended on the day, cancel the outing outside the city rather than automatically waiting for the next ferry.
