At a glance

  • If you’re staying in Tsim Sha Tsui, have dinner and look across the harbor toward Hong Kong Island from the promenade. Take the Star Ferry to Central only if you have enough energy to continue to the Peak. From Central Pier 7, you’ll need to travel to the Peak Tram Lower Terminus on Garden Road; it’s not right next to the pier.
  • If you’re staying on Hong Kong Island, you don’t need to cross the harbor to Tsim Sha Tsui just to see the waterfront. It’s easier to start on the Central waterfront, or visit the Peak first and take a short harbor-side walk after coming down. If you specifically want the Tsim Sha Tsui view, save the Peak for another clear day.
  • Decide whether to visit the Peak after you’ve checked in, not when your plane lands. Immigration, baggage, the trip to your hotel, and dinner all take time. If you won’t leave your hotel until after 7 p.m. or you’re sleepy after a long flight, keep it simple with the harbor and a nearby meal.

Day by day

Suggested itinerary

Tsim Sha Tsui hotel · Clear, early evening

Hotel and dinner → Tsim Sha Tsui Promenade → Star Ferry to Central → Peak Tram Lower Terminus on Garden Road → the Peak → descend and return to your hotel

Hong Kong Island hotel · When you have enough energy

Hotel → Central waterfront or the Peak, whichever you want to visit first → choose the second stop based on time and visibility → hotel

When to include the Peak on your first day

Choose your ticket based on visibility

The Peak Tram is listed as operating from 07:30 to 23:00, and Sky Terrace 428 from 08:30 to 22:00. The viewing deck closes before the tram, even though the tram runs later. As of 2026-10-03, an adult tram round-trip ticket was HK$116, and a combined tram round-trip and Sky Terrace ticket was HK$182. Going to the Peak and entering the paid viewing deck are separate things. If the clouds are low, it’s better not to buy a ticket in advance that day.

Allow separate time for the ferry crossing and the trip back down

You’ll need time for the Star Ferry queue and crossing, travel from Central Pier to the Lower Terminus, the tram queue, time at the summit, the descent, and the trip back to your hotel. For planning, allow 4–5 hours total after check-in, including at least 2 hours for the Peak itself plus harbor access, a meal, and the return trip. These estimates don’t guarantee short lines, so skip the Peak if the wait is long.

Decide how you’ll come back down to avoid rushing later

For your first visit at night, a round-trip tram ticket makes the way back down easier to follow. Don’t stay too long at the summit; check your connection back to the MTR and set a target time to descend. The last ferry, tram, and MTR each apply to different locations. If your plan depends on catching the last ferry or last tram, save the Peak for another day.

How to fit it in

From a Tsim Sha Tsui hotel, follow this route: promenade → Star Ferry to Central → Peak Tram Lower Terminus → the Peak → back to your hotel. If you’re staying on Hong Kong Island, focus on the Central waterfront and the Peak to avoid an extra harbor crossing.

Reality check

Transport

From Tsim Sha Tsui, cross to Central Pier 7, then make a separate transfer to the Peak Tram Lower Terminus on Garden Road. If walking, allow 30 minutes of extra planning time for the route from the waterfront through downtown and uphill, and save the walking route in your map app. If walking is difficult, check Citybus’s same-day service and stops for Route 15C from Central (Hong Kong Observation Wheel) to Garden Road (Lower Peak Tram Terminus). Route 15 to the summit and Route 15C to the Lower Terminus have different destinations. Also allow time to get back to your hotel after coming down.

Time

Plan for 4–5 hours after check-in and allow at least 2 hours for the Peak visit and round-trip waits. If you’re delayed, face long lines, or feel tired, just visit the harbor.

Cost

An adult Peak Tram round-trip ticket is HK$116; a round-trip ticket combined with Sky Terrace admission is HK$182. A one-way Star Ferry ticket on the upper deck is HK$5 Monday through Friday, excluding public holidays, and HK$6.50 on Saturdays, Sundays, and public holidays. Access to the Lower Terminus, return to your hotel, and meals are extra.

Safety

If you’re tired after a long flight or there’s a strong-wind or heavy-rain warning, cut back on outdoor night views. Choose how to get back with the wait for the Peak Tram or bus in mind.

If plans change

If you arrive late or feel tired

See the harbor from near your hotel and have dinner. Save the Peak for the next clear day and don’t add more travel that night.

If visibility from the summit is poor or lines are long

Skip the Peak and have dinner in your current area. Before switching to an indoor attraction, check its admission cutoff and whether travel time works.

Small tip

If fog obscures the Peak, don’t rush to book another paid viewpoint that night. See the city from the harbor beneath the low clouds, then finish with dinner and leave the rest of your arrival-day plan open.

Final check before departure

  • After check-in, calculate whether you have at least 4 hours for the entire outing, including a meal and the return trip.
  • Choose whether to cross from Tsim Sha Tsui to Central or stay on Hong Kong Island, based on where you’re staying.
  • Check the official Peak ticket terms, visibility, and same-day warnings. Save a target time to come down and your route back to the hotel.
