At a glance
- Plan your trip back using your hotel’s actual address and the station exit you need to reach. Save the hotel’s English and Chinese addresses and phone number offline, and check whether its entrance or reception hours change for late arrivals. The Peak, Lan Kwai Fong, and night markets each differ in walking time to a station and transfers, so the same cutoff time won’t work for all of them.
- Enter your current station and the station near your hotel in the MTR’s official route planner. Check the last train and whether your transfer is possible. The last train leaving a station may not be the last connecting train for your direction. Set the time you leave a restaurant or finish sightseeing by subtracting walking time to the station, transfers, and a buffer from the last train time. Leaving 45–60 minutes before the last train is a starting point; you may need to leave earlier from outlying areas.
- Save one backup ride before you need it. Compare an official taxi stand in a well-lit area, a licensed taxi booking service, and a late-night bus stop serving your destination. Don’t assume a bus is headed toward your hotel just because its route number starts with N; check the stop, terminus, and drop-off location. Keep a power bank and a screenshot of your address in case your phone battery runs low.

Check the last train and backup transport
Hong Kong’s red urban taxis currently start at HK$29 for the first 2 km, with distance, waiting time, and applicable extra charges added. That doesn’t mean any ride from Central to a hotel costs HK$29. For trips across the harbor, check the estimated total including tunnel charges, and ask about payment methods before getting in. Booking services may use a different fare structure, so check the confirmed terms shown on screen.
If the trains have stopped, don’t run down an uncertain shortcut or follow touts offering rides. Recheck your route from a well-lit open business, hotel, or taxi stand. Share your pickup location and return plan with your companions, and avoid a long walk alone through dark alleys if you’ve been drinking. Show the driver your hotel address and save your receipt and vehicle details in case you need to report a lost item. If you need to get to the airport early the next day, shorten your night out to make time for sleep and a reliable ride back.
How to fit it in
As soon as you reach your evening destination, choose two ways back and a time to switch plans. When that time comes, leave without delay.
