At a glance

  • This route starts with dinner in Wan Chai, then takes the tram toward Happy Valley and adds the racecourse only on race nights. Happy Valley races are usually held on Wednesday nights, but that does not mean they take place every Wednesday. Check the HKJC schedule for both the date and the venue: Happy Valley. You can’t watch a Sha Tin race from Happy Valley.
  • Check that the tram’s front destination sign says Happy Valley, and board through the rear door. Not every tram heading east on Hong Kong Island goes into Happy Valley. The adult tram fare is HK$3.30, paid when you exit through the front door. On the upper deck, hold the handrail and get ready to use the stairs before your stop; watch for sudden stops and narrow steps. If the stairs feel difficult, choose the lower deck from the start.
  • At the HKJC General Public Enclosure, you can pay the HK$10 admission fee with Octopus. Special and members’ areas have different costs and conditions. Slippers, flip-flops, and plastic shoes are not allowed even in the general area. Children under 18 cannot enter areas where betting is available, so don’t include racecourse entry in a plan with children. You can watch the races and atmosphere without placing a bet.

Steps for a race-night visit

Know the difference between the Happy Valley tram terminus and the racecourse entrance

Arriving at the Happy Valley tram terminus does not mean you can immediately take your seat at the racecourse. Check the walking route to the general admission entrance on the racecourse map for Wong Nai Chung Road. The gates usually open two hours before the first race, but this can change for special events. Allow about 3–4 hours for dinner, the tram, and watching a few races; you don’t have to stay until the last race.

Plan your return before the evening starts

Before entering, decide whether you’ll walk to Causeway Bay Station or take the tram back to Wan Chai. Transport and sidewalks may be crowded after the races, so check the last MTR train using the official journey planner. If there’s no race or it’s canceled, have dinner in Wan Chai or Causeway Bay and take just one tram ride. If you’ve been drinking, be especially careful on road crossings and upper-deck stairs, and set aside money for alternative transport.

How to fit it in

On a day when the HKJC calendar confirms a Happy Valley race and the first-race time, go from dinner in Wan Chai to Happy Valley by tram, then enter the general viewing area.

Reality check

Transport

From Central or Wan Chai, board a tram displaying Happy Valley as its destination. For the return, check the opposite-direction service at the tram terminus, or save a walking or taxi route to Causeway Bay Station in advance.

Time

Allow 3–4 hours for the tram ride, neighborhood walk, and dinner.

Cost

One-way adult tram fare: HK$3.30. General Public Enclosure admission on race days: HK$10. Meals, return transport, and special areas are extra.

Safety

Children under 18 cannot enter areas where betting is available. Watch your step on tram stairs and take care when crossing roads at night. Check the last service for your chosen return transport.

If plans change

See Hong Kong Island at night by tram and Happy Valley: If the tram is delayed

Take the MTR or bus only as far as Causeway Bay to shorten the evening route.

See Hong Kong Island at night by tram and Happy Valley: If race-day crowds are heavy

If entrance queues and traffic are heavy, skip the racecourse and have dinner in Wan Chai or Causeway Bay.

Small tip

Races are generally held on Wednesday nights during the season, but special dates may apply. After checking the schedule, confirm admission fees, ID requirements, and the day’s arrangements in the official visitor information.

Final check before departure

  • Check the Happy Valley tram destination sign and terminus
  • Check race dates, the general spectator entrance and admission requirements, and return transport
  • Check your Octopus balance

Check the race schedule, spectator entrance and admission requirements, tram service changes, and return transport on the day of your visit. Do not plan to visit the racecourse as a spectator on a non-race night.
