At a glance
- Since private cars can’t enter, first choose between the shuttle from the Sawando parking area and the train-and-bus connection via Matsumoto and Shin-Shimashima.
- Buses and trails can be crowded on summer weekends and during peak season, so arriving early helps.
- Even for a short walk, bring rain gear, a warm layer, and comfortable walking shoes.
- Allow time for the bus queue and return to the terminal early enough to catch a bus before the last departure.
- If you’re renting a car, leave it at the Sawando parking area and transfer to the shuttle. The 2026 Sawando–Kamikochi bus service is listed as running from April 17 to November 15. Seats are first come, first served, with no advance reservations. The fare is ¥1,600 one way or ¥3,000 round trip for adults, so add parking and shuttle fares for each person separately. For a trip next year, check that year’s schedule.
- The bus via Shin-Shimashima from Matsumoto has different reservation rules from the Sawando shuttle. Alpico prioritizes reservations on that route, so check round-trip buses and train connections for each leg. On either route, don’t book only your morning arrival and leave your final return bus undecided until you get there.
- For a first visit, either get off near Taisho Pond and walk toward Kappabashi, or take a shorter round trip from the bus terminal to the Kappabashi area. If you extend your walk to Myojin, set aside half a day for the walk, including the return leg. Plan on 4–6 hours in the area for walking, meals, restroom stops, and bus queues. If the rain gets heavier or you’re tired, end your walk around Kappabashi.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Take a bus from Matsumoto, Shin-Shimashima, or Sawando, and confirm your return bus.
Choose either Taisho Pond→Kappabashi or a short round trip from the terminal to Kappabashi, with time for lunch and a break.
Return to the bus terminal with time to spare and follow the instructions for your route, whether it gives priority to reservations or boards on a first-come, first-served basis.
How to fit it in
Add a day to your Matsumoto itinerary if you’d like to walk beside a river and through the forest. To get an early start, you can also stay inside the park or nearby overnight.
Reality check
If you’re renting a car, park at Sawando and take the shuttle, which does not accept advance reservations. From Matsumoto or Shin-Shimashima, connect by train and bus; reservations are prioritized on some routes. Check the round-trip connections for your route, and don’t plan to drive between the parking area and destinations inside Kamikochi.
Even a visit just around Kappabashi takes a full day once you include round-trip travel. If you walk to Myojin Pond, set aside extra time for meals and restroom stops.
As of the 2026 fare information, the Sawando shuttle costs ¥3,000 round trip for adults. Parking, meals, and transportation to the departure point are extra. If you travel via Matsumoto, check which sections are covered by your combined train and bus ticket. Staying overnight gives you more time for an early walk, but adds lodging costs and dinner arrangements.
These are mountain trails in a valley, even if they’re easy walks. Check for rain, cold temperatures, bear advisories, and slippery boardwalks, and avoid walking in sandals.
If plans change
Follow trail closure notices and postpone your visit. Instead, visit a museum or hot spring in Matsumoto.
Skip the long round trip to Myojin, visit just one nearer section—Kappabashi or Taisho Pond—and join the bus line early.
Small tip
Don’t underestimate round-trip travel time. Waiting for the bus can be more tiring than the walk itself.
Final check before departure
- Check your round-trip options, distinguishing the reservation-priority bus via Matsumoto from the no-reservation Sawando shuttle.
- Check the operating season and timetable for the year of your visit, ticket office hours, and parking details.
- Check trail closures and rain conditions. Bring rain gear, a warm layer, and water, and allow extra time for bus queues.
On 2026-10-03, we checked Alpico’s reservation policies by route and the Sawando shuttle fare. Don’t assume the 2026 operating season will be the same next year. Check the timetable for your visit date, trail closures, and return bus options.
