At a glance

  • First decide whether to start at Tateyama Station on the Toyama side or Ogizawa on the Nagano side.
  • Even traveling straight through takes time, so don’t overfill your schedule with walks and meal stops.
  • Weather at Murodo can change quickly, even in midsummer, so bring a warm layer and rain gear.
  • A delay on any one mode of transport can affect your later connections. This is not a simple sightseeing stop where you can linger for hours at both Murodo and Kurobe Dam.
  • Choose first between a through trip from Toyama toward Nagano and a round trip from Tateyama Station as far as Murodo. A through trip means connecting from the mountain transport route—Tateyama → Murodo → Kurobe Dam → Ogizawa—to your lodging. If you leave a car at your starting parking lot, you’ll finish on the opposite side, so arrange a vehicle transfer or return plan and account for the cost, or keep the trip to a round trip.
  • When buying web tickets, check the departure point and time, and whether each section is one-way or round-trip, on the booking screen. Transport from Toyama city to Tateyama Station, buses and trains beyond Ogizawa, and luggage delivery may not be included in the same ticket. Save your reservation number and pickup instructions, note how early you need to arrive before boarding, and check whether you need to buy a separate ticket for each transfer.
  • For a full-route trip, set aside 6–8 hours as a planning estimate for mountain transport, waits, and meals, and first consider staying overnight at your departure point the night before. Don’t plan a long stay at both Murodo and Kurobe Dam; choose one as your main stop. If clouds or strong winds obscure the upper route, or some services stop, follow on-site guidance and turn back. Don’t walk through a closed section to make it to lodging on the other side.

Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

Previous day

Confirm whether you’ll start at Tateyama Station in the west or Ogizawa in the east. Check tickets, seat reservations, luggage delivery terms, and service updates for the day.

Early morning

Board the first section with plenty of time and travel to Murodo. Walk slowly to give yourself time to adjust to the altitude.

Afternoon

Limit your time at Kurobe Dam so you can travel through before the last connection on the other side, then head directly to your lodging in Toyama or Nagano.

How to fit it in

This route works especially well on a day when you’re traveling between Nagano and Toyama. Going through is more time-efficient than backtracking.

Reality check

Transport

First choose your direction: Tateyama Station on the Toyama side or Ogizawa on the Nagano side. You’ll transfer between several modes of transport, so the schedule for each section matters.

Time

Allow a full day even if you only travel straight through. If you want to walk around Murodo and spend time at Kurobe Dam, it’s more reliable to start close to the first departure.

Cost

Budget separately for the Alpine Route ticket, rail travel in the cities before and after, luggage delivery, and lodging. Depending on where you stay, traveling through may be more efficient than taking a round trip.

Safety

At Murodo’s high elevation, cut your walk short and ask staff for help if you become short of breath or feel unwell. Even in midsummer, prepare for cold and strong winds. Do not try to bypass suspended services or restricted sections on foot.

If plans change

If tickets for the first section are sold out

Compare a different departure time with a round trip to Murodo, and buy only if the return connection works. If neither option is available, switch to indoor activities from a base in Toyama or Nagano.

If services on the upper route are suspended

Use only the sections the operator says are available, or stay at your departure point. If you’ve booked lodging or luggage delivery on the other side, first check when you can make changes and whom to contact.

Small tip

The key is the transport and schedule for each section. If the weather is poor, spend less time at high elevation and leave more time for travel.

Final check before departure

  • Choose between a through trip and a round trip, and confirm your first boarding reservation and your final descent and lodging connections.
  • Check schedules and service notices for each section, ticket pickup and refund terms, and luggage delivery deadlines.
  • Plan how you’ll retrieve a rental car, and bring a warm layer and rain gear. Allow time to walk slowly at high elevation.
  • Check the schedule for your travel date for section operating hours and ticket sales and pickup deadlines.

The official 2026 Alpine Route opening period is April 15–November 30. Check the operating schedule for each section, weather-related service updates, and ticket sales for your actual travel date. Do not assume next year’s opening dates will be the same.
