At a glance
- First choose how you will get there from Shin-Aomori, Hachinohe, or Lake Towada, then check bus operating days and times.
- Rather than walking the entire gorge, choose key waterfall and stream sections that suit your energy level.
- The rocks are wet and some paths are narrow, so choose shoes with good grip over sandals.
- Some parts of the gorge trail run close to the road, and cell service and bus frequency are limited. Do not assume you can call a taxi wherever you are.
- The gorge is about 14 km long, so do not plan a round trip over the full route as part of a day of walking and taking photos. For a first visit, choose a short out-and-back near Ishigedo or focus on the waterfall section around Choshi Otaki and Nenokuchi. For a one-way walk, first confirm that a bus actually runs from the final stop back to your starting point or lodging.
- If you leave your car in one parking lot, you will need to walk back the distance you covered. If you plan to take a bus back to your car, time your walk to finish around the bus schedule and save the stop names in Japanese. Do not count on finding a taxi at every point; if the bus connections do not work, switch to a short out-and-back.
- Aomori’s official visitor information lists a bus ride of about 120 minutes from Aomori Station to Yakeyama, and says service is suspended in winter. Check the operator’s timetable again to confirm your actual departure station, operating day, and stop. Planning for 2–3 hours of walking and 1–2 hours for a meal and bus waits helps you work out the day separately from the journey to the area. Food is not readily available all along the trail, so bring water and a light meal from your starting point.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Check actual operating days for JR buses or local transit, Oirase access, and rain conditions, then stay near Lake Towada or in Aomori.
Choose one key section among Yakeyama, Ishigedo, and Choshi Otaki that lets you return by bus from a stop, then walk along the stream.
Aim to reach your stop one bus earlier than planned, and add time at Lake Towada only if you still have a return connection.
How to fit it in
A good choice for a day on a Tohoku trip when you want to take your time among summer forests and streams. A rental car makes getting around easier, but you will need to plan parking and walking sections separately.
Reality check
Check bus routes connecting Shin-Aomori, Hachinohe, and Lake Towada. If renting a car, plan separate start and pickup points for your walk.
Trying to cover the entire gorge can make for a long day. Choose key waterfall and stream sections, and leave separate time for Lake Towada.
Your budget can vary widely depending on whether you use long-distance rail, local buses, a rental car, or lodging near Lake Towada. Check which routes your transit pass covers.
Watch your footing on wet rocks and on walking sections close to the road. Do not enter areas subject to on-site restrictions due to rain, high water, or wildlife. Plan an early return so you do not have a long walk from the gorge to your car after dark.
If plans change
Walk only a short out-and-back near Ishigedo, where there is a bus stop, or stay near your starting point. Do not plan to sort out how to retrieve your car after missing the last bus.
Stop the gorge walk and shorten your visit to an indoor stop, such as the Oirase Gorge Museum, after confirming its hours. If access there is also restricted, rest at your lodging and stay away from riverside restriction lines and wet rocks.
Small tip
The gorge can feel especially atmospheric after rain, but the paths become more slippery. Watch your footing before taking photos.
Final check before departure
- Check bus operating days for your travel year, departure station, return stop, and whether reservations are required.
- Check trail access, rain, and wildlife notices, as well as the visitor center’s hours.
- Plan how you will retrieve your car, and bring water, lunch, and shoes with good grip.
JR bus operating days and trail restrictions due to high water or falling rocks can change at Oirase Gorge. Check both Lake Towada transportation updates and trail notices.
