At a glance
- Add a night only if you have time to travel to Kinugawa after visiting Nikko and enjoy the gorge or hot springs the next day. Check whether dinner, breakfast, and hot spring access are included in the room rate to compare costs with staying another night in Tokyo.
- On day one, visit the cultural sites around Tobu-Nikko, then travel to your Kinugawa lodging before dark. The next morning, take a stroll around the hot spring area and return to Tokyo. If you start sightseeing late, shorten your Nikko itinerary so you can check in on time.
- Coordinate the lodging shuttle, dinner cutoff, and check-in time with the train schedule. If even one runs late, you’ll spend more time making connections than enjoying the hot springs.
- If you don’t have time to stay overnight, visit Nikko as a day trip. Adding both Kinugawa and a bathing facility in Tokyo to the same itinerary doesn’t fit a trip focused on relaxation.
- Nikko’s historic sites and Kinugawa lodging are not near the same station. From Tobu-Nikko, return to Shimo-Imaichi and connect toward the Kinugawa Line before your lodging’s dinner cutoff. Kinugawa Onsen Hotel (鬼怒川温泉ホテル) is one option to compare. Don’t assume its station shuttle is free; check the hotel’s instructions and fees.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Travel from Tokyo to Tobu-Nikko, store your luggage, then visit just one area of historic sites, such as Toshogu Shrine. Don’t try to include Lake Chuzenji as well.
Allow 1 hour 30 minutes for the trip from Tobu-Nikko to Shimo-Imaichi to Kinugawa-Onsen, including travel to your lodging. Check in before dinner service ends, then bathe and have dinner.
After breakfast and a soak, use the lodging’s recommended transport to get back to the station. Book a limited express from Kinugawa-Onsen to Asakusa and return to Tokyo; don’t go back to the Nikko lakes that day.
Places and meals
Choose this option only if you want to stay overnight after visiting Nikko’s shrines and temples, then relax by the gorge or in a hot spring the next day

Google MapsHow to fit it in
Visit Nikko’s cultural sites from the morning of day one, then travel to Kinugawa and stay overnight before dark. If your lodging provides a shuttle, arrive at the pickup point 15 minutes early. The next day, take a short walk around the hot spring town after breakfast and checkout, then return to Tokyo.
Reality check
For travel between Tobu-Nikko and Kinugawa-Onsen, plan to transfer at Shimo-Imaichi. Even if the train ride itself looks short, allow 1 to 1 hour 30 minutes for transfer waits and travel from the station to your lodging. Allow around 2 hours for a direct limited express from Asakusa to Kinugawa-Onsen, and reserve an actual train. Check whether a limited express ticket costs extra even if you have a pass. Don’t confuse JR Nikko Station with Tobu-Nikko Station.
Allow 4 to 5 hours for Nikko’s cultural sites on day one, plus at least 1 hour for travel to Kinugawa and the shuttle. Finish sightseeing in time to reach your lodging at least 60 minutes before dinner service ends. The next day, spend just 1 to 2 hours walking after breakfast and a soak, and leave a 30-minute buffer between checkout and your train back to Tokyo.
To compare the cost of one night, add the total lodging price for the room, dinner, and breakfast; limited express and base-fare tickets; Nikko bus and site admission costs; and station shuttle or taxi fares. For example, if lodging for two people is quoted at ¥40,000, that works out to ¥20,000 per person, plus transport and admission costs. ¥40,000 is an example for calculation, not an actual hotel rate. Don’t compare the total cost of a hot spring trip using only the price after subtracting one night in Tokyo.
In winter, the sun sets early and walking paths can ice over. Avoid riverside walks after dark for safety, and wear shoes with good grip. Don’t use the hot springs immediately after drinking alcohol.
If plans change
If the shuttle or train connection changes, contact your lodging to confirm whether you can still arrive, and shorten your Nikko visit. If you’ll arrive after dinner service ends, first secure another lodging option or a train back to Nikko or Tokyo.
If snow or fatigue makes travel difficult, shorten your Nikko visit and head to your lodging early. If getting to Kinugawa itself feels unsafe, skip the overnight stay and choose an alternative that gets you back to Nikko or Tokyo while it’s still light.
Small tip
If you don’t coordinate the lodging shuttle, dinner cutoff, and check-in time with the train schedule, making connections will take center stage instead of enjoying the hot springs. Contact your lodging directly to ask whether late arrivals are allowed and whether an alternative meal is available if you miss dinner.
Final check before departure
- Before you leave, check the official operating and reservation details for an overnight stay in Kinugawa Onsen
- Save the round-trip route to Kinugawa Onsen and the last return option in case you need them
