At a glance
- For a bus trip, first check whether there are restaurants within walking distance of your lodging. Even at a quiet seaside stay, you may need a taxi for dinner if buses stop running in the evening. Compare a seaside stay with one in town by adding round-trip transportation costs to the room price.
- The ferry ride to Udo takes about 10–15 minutes, depending on the route, but ticketing, boarding waits, and getting around the island take additional time. Visit Jeju estimates 3–4 hours for one or two main sights and a meal, so leave at least half a day for the round trip to the harbor as well.
- Restrictions on outside vehicles operating on Udo apply from August 1, 2026, through July 31, 2029. Some low-emission rental cars, vehicles used by people with mobility needs, and vehicles belonging to overnight guests may qualify for exceptions. Don’t assume your car can go just because it’s electric; confirm the vehicle type and required documents with the ferry operator.
Time to leave between arrival and departure
A simple day-by-day plan
Here’s a sample 2-night, 3-day itinerary combining Jeju City and the east. If you’re heading to Seogwipo, spend the second day in that area instead of going to Seongsan and Udo.
Airport → pick up a rental car or take the bus → lodging in Jeju City → around Dongmun Market
Allow time for pickup and unpacking. If you arrive in the evening, don’t add a distant coastal stop.
Lodging → Seongsan Port and Udo, or the Seongsan area → lodging
Check the last return ferry before departure. If ferries are canceled, switch to an itinerary in the east that doesn’t include the island.
Walk near your lodging → collect your luggage → return the rental car or take a bus to the airport → airport
Work backward from your airline’s recommended check-in time, allowing for car return and the shuttle, to decide when to finish sightseeing.
Places and meals
How to fit it in
For a 2-night, 3-day trip, a simple plan is to pair Jeju City with Seongsan, or Jeju City with Seogwipo. If you arrive late in the afternoon, spend your first day getting settled and having dinner. If Udo is a priority, stay near Seongsan the night before to avoid a long morning trip to the harbor.
Reality check
Using one lodging base and getting around by bus and on foot means less time behind the wheel. Search your actual departure and arrival stops in the Jeju Bus Information System, and try to limit long-distance travel to about once a day. Before booking a rental car, check license, age, and driving experience requirements, and whether you need to register an additional driver. Having a car won’t eliminate narrow streets or peak-season parking delays.
For a 2-night, 3-day trip, plan on two areas and one or two coastal stops a day. Set aside at least half a day for Udo and 2–3 hours for a coastal stop with a walk and a meal. These are suggested visit durations, not bus or ferry schedules. On your departure day, keep your plans near the airport.
Compare rental cars by total cost, including the rental fee, insurance and deductible terms, fuel, and parking. Read the exclusions and coverage for single-vehicle accidents, too. For a bus trip, add the estimated cost of one return taxi ride when comparing lodging locations. Admission to Udo Marine Park is 1,000 won for adults; ferry fares and island transportation cost extra.
Wet basalt is slippery, and large waves can come in suddenly. Stay away from the ends of breakwaters in strong winds. Check which types of bicycles and electric vehicles are permitted on Udo and whether they’re insured; if you’re not comfortable driving, take the island bus. It’s best to avoid visiting Udo on your flight day because of possible ferry cancellations and waits.
If plans change
If it’s raining or strong winds cancel the ferries, skip Udo. If you learn about a cancellation near the airport, spend the day dining or visiting indoor attractions in Jeju City instead of making a long round trip to the harbor.
Choose one lodging base in Jeju City with good bus access, and visit just one area a day. Before connecting two outlying stops by taxi, compare the estimated round-trip fare.
Small tip
Before booking a place to stay, check all three legs using the same mode of transport: airport to lodging, lodging to your farthest stop, and lodging back to the airport. For buses, allow extra time for transfers and the walk from the stop to your lodging. Rental cars require a shuttle to an off-airport pickup lot and a return trip to the airport after drop-off.
Final check before departure
- Compare your flight times with the rental car office hours, and confirm where to pick up or return the car if you arrive late.
- Save your lodging stop and the airport route in the Jeju Bus Information System. Check the last departure from the route’s starting point separately from the time the bus passes your stop.
- On the day you visit Udo, check ferry service and the last return trip. Bring your ID and any documents needed to qualify for a vehicle exception.
Udo vehicle access and ferry service, Jeju bus schedules, and rental car pickup requirements can vary with weather, peak season, and operating policies.
