At a glance
- The tourism board describes the walk connecting Yung Shue Wan and Sok Kwu Wan as taking about 90 minutes. Allow half a day for the walk and a meal, especially if you’re traveling with children or stopping at the beach.
- Pick up snacks and water in Yung Shue Wan. At a midway rest stop, check whether the kids are up for more walking. Once you reach Sok Kwu Wan, decide whether to eat or head straight back to catch your ferry.
- Central↔Yung Shue Wan and Central↔Sok Kwu Wan are separate ferry routes. Don’t assume one round-trip ticket covers both. Check the operator’s Monday–Saturday and Sunday/public holiday schedules, and confirm the departure and return piers and fares for each leg.

Suggested itinerary

Central Pier 4 → ferry to Yung Shue Wan → Yung Shue Wan village → Hung Shing Yeh Beach → scenic section → Sok Kwu Wan Pier → ferry to Central
- Before you leave, choose a ferry time to return to Central from Sok Kwu Wan.
- On the island, decide whether to stop along the way based on the children’s energy, shade, and water supply.
How to fit it in
From Central Pier 4, take the ferry to Yung Shue Wan and walk in one direction, passing Hung Shing Yeh Beach on the way to Sok Kwu Wan. Getting around the island is mainly on foot; take the ferry from Sok Kwu Wan back to Central. If you need a stroller or have a child who walks slowly, plan a shorter outing around Yung Shue Wan and return to the same pier.
Reality check
Take the ferry from Central to Yung Shue Wan, walk across the island, then take a Central-bound ferry from Sok Kwu Wan. Save the Monday–Saturday and Sunday/public holiday schedules for each route separately from the operator’s website. The times shown are when the pier gate closes, so arrive early.
The walk between the two villages is described as taking about 90 minutes. Add ferry wait times, breaks with children, and a meal, and you’ll need at least half a day. Choose your return ferry before heading to the island.
Calculate the ferry fare separately for Central→Yung Shue Wan and Sok Kwu Wan→Central, then add the cost of meals and snacks on the island. Fares differ between Monday–Saturday and Sundays/public holidays, so check the schedule for your visit date.
For a safe walk with children, avoid steep slopes and stairs that are difficult with a stroller, as well as extreme heat, thunderstorms, and dark paths after sunset.
If plans change
Check which pier is closest to your current location and when the next ferry to Central leaves, then shorten your walk. Don’t assume that walking back to your starting point is always the shorter option.
Postpone your island visit and switch to an indoor activity in the city. After the warning ends, check whether ferry service has resumed.
Small tip
If you’re traveling with children, don’t assume you have to reach the far end of the island. Before departure, choose a ferry one sailing earlier than your target return. If, within 30 minutes, your child is struggling with the heat or stairs, return to the same pier and switch to a rest break in town.
Final check before departure
- Save a screenshot of the round-trip ferry times
- If you need a stroller, decide in advance whether to shorten the outing to a round trip around Yung Shue Wan
- Bring water and hats, and plan a return time before sunset
