At a glance

  • The Ngong Ping 360 ride takes about 25 minutes. Time in the Tung Chung boarding queue and the walk through Ngong Ping Village are additional. Once you reach the village, follow signs for the Big Buddha and Po Lin Monastery. Don’t spend all your time first at the photo spots and souvenir shops.
  • Visit the plaza below for a view of the Big Buddha and pay your respects at Po Lin Monastery before deciding whether to climb the steps. If someone in your group has knee or breathing problems, you don’t have to reach the top for the visit to feel complete.
  • Cable car cabins include Standard and Crystal options. If a glass floor isn’t a priority, the Standard cabin still offers the same views in that direction. Meals, interior exhibits, and experience packages are not all included in the basic cable car ticket.

How to fit it in

Reality check

Transport

From MTR Tung Chung Station, find the Ngong Ping 360 Tung Chung terminal. If the cable car is not operating, check NLB bus route 23 from Tung Chung to Ngong Ping. Po Lin Monastery and the Big Buddha are a walk from the Ngong Ping terminal, so don’t count sightseeing time as starting when you board.

Time

Set aside 5–7 hours, including round-trip city travel, ticketing, and boarding queues. Allow 60 minutes for Ngong Ping Village and Po Lin Monastery, 30–45 minutes for the steps and Big Buddha round trip, and 45–60 minutes for a meal. If it’s crowded, shorten the afternoon plan that adds Tai O.

Cost

The official listed round-trip fare for an adult in a standard cabin is HK$295; prices vary by cabin, one-way or return travel, and combination tickets. Check the date, refund terms, and actual price on the booking page. Treat general access to the plaza and monastery separately from any additional interior facilities or meal packages, and budget HK$80–150 for lunch as a planning estimate.

Safety

The Big Buddha steps can be more strenuous in rain or heat. Bring water, a hat, and shoes with good traction, and take breaks as needed. At the monastery, keep worship areas clear. In strong winds or during a typhoon, check cable car operations and return transport first. Avoid blocking the steps or stepping backward while taking photos.

If plans change

If the steps are too difficult

See the Big Buddha from the plaza below, then visit Po Lin Monastery and the village. Don’t push anyone in your group beyond their limits just to get a photo from the top of the steps.

If the cable car is not operating

Check bus 23 and the weather together. If a weather warning makes sightseeing in the mountains difficult, switch to an indoor city plan and check whether your ticket can be refunded or changed due to the service suspension.

Small tip

Some sections have lots of steps and little shade, so bring water and comfortable walking shoes.

Final check before departure

  • Check for cable car maintenance, operating hours, and ticket cabin types.
  • Consider whether you have the stamina for the Big Buddha steps, and check Po Lin Monastery’s visiting hours.
  • Save the bus 23 alternative and your return time to Tung Chung.

Ngong Ping 360 is generally listed as operating 10:00–18:00 on weekdays and 09:00–18:30 on weekends and public holidays. Hours can change due to maintenance or weather, and Po Lin Monastery and the Big Buddha area do not necessarily close at the same time as the cable car. Check the on-site hours for each area first.
