Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

Pickup day

Check the vehicle’s exterior and insurance → practice handling in the car park → drive to nearby accommodation

Each driving day

Check road alerts → refuel → take a break every two hours → arrive before sunset

How to fit it in

For itineraries built around driving, plan fewer attractions each day and aim to reach your accommodation before sunset.

Reality check

Transport

On your first day, drive only short routes near the airport until you’re comfortable with left-side driving and a right-hand-drive car. Follow signs when passing or crossing one-lane bridges.

Time

Don't rely on map estimates alone: road width, curves, construction, and photo stops can add time. Take a break about every 2 hours, shorten each day's drive, and aim to reach your accommodation before dark.

Cost

Add insurance, the excess and deposit, additional drivers, one-way drop-off, fuel, parking, and tolls to the rental price. Check whether glass, tires, the vehicle’s underbody, and unsealed roads are covered. A deposit held on your card isn’t a spent cost, but it can reduce the credit available to you during the trip.

Safety

Stop driving if you’re sleepy or facing icy roads, strong winds, or animals at night. Use your phone only after pulling over safely.

If plans change

If you’re not comfortable driving or feel tired

Skip a long drive on pickup day and rest at nearby accommodation. If driving still feels like too much the next day, switch to intercity coaches and local tours, and check the rental car’s cancellation terms.

If a road is closed

Check NZTA guidance for possible detours and let your accommodation know if you’ll be delayed. Don’t let your navigation app divert you onto narrow rural roads to get around a closure.

Small tip

Before departure, check the latest official information on International Driving Permits and certified translations, rental terms, and winter equipment requirements.

Final check before departure

  • Compare your original license, accepted English translation or International Driving Permit, and the requirements for the named driver and payment card.
  • Save the pickup location’s hours and any after-hours return and refueling requirements from your booking confirmation.
  • Check NZTA road alerts and the forecast each driving day. Decide where to take breaks and refuel, and when to stop sightseeing.

Verified as of 2026-07-30. The current recognition period for foreign driver's licenses is 18 months; it changes to 12 months on 2026-11-01. Check NZTA road alerts and license guidance again on your departure date.
