At a glance

  • The Former Temiya Line is a remnant of the railway that linked Temiya and Sapporo in 1880 and carried coal to the port. It closed in 1985 and now forms a walking path about 1.6 km long. This route includes only a short walk through the central section between Otaru Station and the canal, rather than following the entire path.
  • Completed in 1923, the canal still has a waterside walkway and stone warehouses. By day, you can see the buildings and water; at night, the gas lamps and warehouse lighting. According to the city, the gas lamps are lit from sunset to 24:00 and the warehouse lights from sunset to 22:30. Arriving at 16:00 in summer does not mean you can see the evening lights right away.
  • Otaru Denuki Koji is a lane where you can choose small shops to visit. Many open during the day, so there is no reason to recommend the whole area only after 16:00. If you are looking for evening bars, check individual opening times, such as 16:00 for Nikabarita and 17:00 for Yakitori Tanyan.
  • Walk along Sakaimachi Street toward the Music Box Museum while browsing glass crafts, sweets, and souvenirs. Closing times vary by shop. If you arrive late, finish your visit to the Music Box Museum first and then head toward the canal, rather than spending a long time shopping along the way.
  • In winter, even short walks take longer because of snow and ice. Spend less time outdoors at the railway and canal and more time shopping indoors or visiting an exhibition. The return walk to Minami-Otaru Station is uphill, so leave extra time for the final stretch.

Route and schedule

By day, walk from Otaru Station via the canal to the Music Box Museum

This example allows about four hours, from 13:00 to 17:00. Plan closer to five hours if you want to spend plenty of time at both a cafe and the House of Western Art's paid exhibition. With only three hours, skip the cafe and visit only the museum's free shop, or skip the museum entirely.

Walking plan by time of day

The times below are examples for dividing your walking and sightseeing time. They do not include JR travel to and from Sapporo or waiting to board. If a line takes longer than expected, shorten your next stop and keep to your planned departure for the station.

13:00 to 14:00 · From the station to the railway and canal

Walk from Otaru Station to the central section of the Former Temiya Line, then to Otaru Canal. Spend only about 10 to 15 minutes at the railway, leaving time for photos and a walk at the canal. If the paths are snowy, skip the railway and go straight to the canal.

Outdoor walk
  • Part of the Former Temiya Line
  • Canal and stone warehouses
14:00 to 15:00 · Warehouses and lanes

Consider LAMP AND BELL, the House of Western Art, and Denuki Koji with Popura Farm, in that order. On a four-hour visit, spend more time on either a cafe break or the museum's paid exhibition, and keep the other stops brief. For a compact three-hour visit, leave out the cafe and shorten visits to the free shop and snack stop depending on the lines.

A break or an exhibition
  • Distinguish the free shop from the paid exhibition
  • Check the last order time for snacks
15:00 to 17:00 · Street shopping and the Music Box Museum

Follow Sakaimachi Street to the Music Box Museum Main Building. After shopping and seeing the Steam Clock, walk uphill to Minami-Otaru Station. Allow 10 to 15 minutes to reach the station, and more in winter or when carrying lots of bags. On a three-hour route, reduce street shopping and aim to leave at 16:00.

Arrive around 16:00 · An evening route starting with the Music Box Museum

Walk from Minami-Otaru Station to the Music Box Museum and Steam Clock, then Sakaimachi, Denuki Koji and the canal area, Otaru Canal, and Otaru Station. Finish shopping before the Main Building closes at 18:00, then head north. This route does not include visits to Popura Farm, the museum exhibition, and a cafe all together. Stay for the canal lights only if you can wait after checking sunset on your travel date against your return JR train.

Reverse the route for a late arrival
  • Visit the Music Box Museum first
  • Check sunset for the season

Places and meals

Otaru Station

This is the starting point for the daytime route in its usual direction. Make a short detour through the central section of the old railway rather than walking straight down to the canal. On the evening route, take your train back to Sapporo from this station.

LAMP AND BELL

Cafe & Bar LAMP AND BELL is in Shibusawa Warehouse C at 5-4 Minatomachi. It is a different warehouse from the one housing the House of Western Art. The tourism association's 2026 PDF lists 11:00 to 18:00, while a local listing carrying shop updates gives 11:00 to 16:30 and 17:00 to 22:00, with irregular closing days. Check its official Instagram for that day's hours and closures. If it is closed, take your break somewhere else.

House of Western Art (Otaru Art Base)

This museum is in the former Naniwa Warehouse. The shop is free to enter, but exhibition admission is ¥1,200 for adults. Distinguish the stained glass exhibits at the House of Western Art from the separate Stained Glass Museum at Otaru Art Base. Exhibition hours are 9:30 to 17:00 from May to October and 10:00 to 17:00 from November to April, with last admission at 16:30. Listed shop hours are 9:30 to 18:00 from May to October, 10:00 to 18:00 from November to April, and until 20:00 on Saturdays. Check the official calendar for exhibition closures on your visit date.

Minami-Otaru Station

This is your starting station if you visit the Music Box Museum first, and your return station on the daytime route. Allow 10 to 15 minutes for the uphill walk from the Main Building, and more in winter. First check whether your train stops here and when your return train leaves.

Google Maps

Choose a daytime walk or an evening view first

For a daytime visit, it is convenient to start at Otaru Station around 13:00 and leave from Minami-Otaru Station around 17:00. If shopping at the Music Box Museum is your priority, or you arrive around 16:00, start at Minami-Otaru Station and walk in the opposite direction toward the canal. Using different stations reduces the need to retrace a long stretch of the route.

Reality check

Transport

A JR train between Sapporo and Otaru takes around 35 minutes each way, depending on the train type and stops. The round trip, platform waiting time, and travel from your accommodation to Sapporo Station are separate from your three to five hours in Otaru. If using Minami-Otaru Station, check the JR Hokkaido timetable to see whether your chosen train stops there. Do not assume a Sapporo subway pass covers the JR journey to Otaru.

Time

Three hours in Otaru is a compact plan linking a short section of railway, the canal, lanes, and the Music Box Museum. Allow four hours if you add a cafe break or the House of Western Art's paid exhibition, and around five hours if you want enough time for both plus shopping. Waiting for sunset and walking on winter snow require extra time.

Cost

Walking along the railway, canal, and lanes, and entering the House of Western Art's shop are free. The museum's paid exhibition costs ¥1,200 for adults. Return JR travel, cafes, snacks, meals, and souvenirs cost extra. Check JR fares for your travel date and seating conditions, and see Popura Farm's menu on the day for prices. Estimate your budget excluding shopping by adding your chosen transport, admission, food, and drinks separately.

Safety

Watch for snow and ice near the canal railings, around the railway, and at crosswalks. Bring shoes that help reduce slipping and suitable outerwear, and spend less time outside if the port wind is strong. In heavy rain or snow, keep canal and railway visits brief and move indoors. If JR services are disrupted, reconsider whether to set off for Otaru at all.

If plans change

If you have only three hours in Otaru

Walk from Otaru Station to part of the railway, the canal, Denuki Koji, Sakaimachi, the Music Box Museum, and Minami-Otaru Station, leaving out the cafe and paid exhibition. Skip snacks too if the line is long, and focus your shopping on the Music Box Museum.

On days with heavy rain or snow, or when walking is difficult

Start at Minami-Otaru Station, visit the Music Box Museum first, and shorten the route to focus on indoor shops along Sakaimachi. If you choose the art museum, leave out the railway walk and cafe, and keep your canal visit brief. If walking all the way between the two stations is difficult, check taxi availability and fares on site.

If the cafe is closed or snack orders have ended

Move to the free shop or Sakaimachi shops instead of waiting outside a closed business. If you arrive late, keep the Music Box Museum and canal lights in your plan, and leave snacks and cafes for another visit.

Small tip

First, choose one place where you want to spend more time: snacks, a cafe, or a paid exhibition. It is difficult to explore all seven places thoroughly, take a cafe break, and see the paid exhibition at the House of Western Art within three hours. Decide what to skip based on your walking pace and shopping time so you do not have to rush for your return train.

Final check before departure

  • Choose whether to start at Otaru Station or Minami-Otaru Station, and save the JR trains for both directions that stop at the stations you will use.
  • Compare your visit order with the Music Box Museum Main Building's 18:00 closing time, the upper floors' 17:45 closing time, and the House of Western Art's 16:30 last admission.
  • Check LAMP AND BELL's official Instagram and Popura Farm's opening hours and last order time for the day.
  • If you plan to see the evening lights, check sunset in Otaru on your travel date together with your return train.
  • Prepare winter footwear, warm clothing, and rain protection, and leave enough time to walk uphill from the Music Box Museum to Minami-Otaru Station.

The Music Box Museum Main Building closes at 18:00, and visits to the second and third floors end at 17:45. If you arrive at 4:00 PM, visit it first. Listed hours for LAMP AND BELL and Popura Farm differ by information source, so check that day's notices. The canal lights come on at sunset, and the wait for the evening view varies by season. In winter, also check for icy paths and JR delay or cancellation notices before leaving.
