At a glance

  • The Donichika Ticket is a subway-only day pass valid on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, and December 29 through January 3. It does not cover buses, streetcars, or JR trains.
  • The weekday subway day pass also covers only the subway. Station ticket machines do not sell it on Saturdays, Sundays, public holidays, or December 29 through January 3; choose a Donichika Ticket or pay per ride then.
  • Tap the same eligible credit, debit, or prepaid physical card—or the same phone or watch—when entering and leaving. Adult subway fares are capped at ¥830 on weekdays and ¥520 on weekends, public holidays, and the year-end holidays. A card and a phone count as different payment methods. Child fares and bus transfer discounts do not apply to contactless payment.
  • SAPICA is a local Sapporo-area card and cannot be used on JR trains. If you already have a nationwide compatible IC card, there is little reason to get a new SAPICA for a short visit.
  • There is no seven-day tourist pass for unlimited subway, bus, and streetcar rides together. JR Hokkaido Bus sells a separate one-day pass for its Sapporo-area routes, but it does not cover other bus companies, the subway, or highway buses. Compare it only when taking that operator's buses repeatedly, after checking its official coverage.
  • A transfer fare may apply when changing between designated subway stations and bus routes with the same IC card. Not all routes qualify. For a bus connection such as Mt. Moiwa, check the eligible routes and your actual journey in Sapporo City Transportation Bureau's fare guide.
  • Commuter passes cover repeated travel between specified stations or stops for work or school. Combined passes exist for the subway, streetcar, and some buses, but they rarely suit visitors changing destinations over a few days. For a trip, a pass usually means a day pass.
  • Assuming you use only adult 210-yen fare sections, 3 trips cost 630 yen and 4 cost 840 yen. In this example, the 520-yen weekend/public-holiday Donichika is cheaper from 3 trips, and the 830-yen weekday one-day subway pass from 4 trips. Calculate actual section fares and any bus or tram use separately.

Count your rides before buying a pass

Choose by travel pattern

If you are only moving between Sapporo Station, Odori, and Susukino, check the walkable stretches on a map first. Add the one-way fares for the subway rides you actually plan, then compare day passes. Three ¥210 rides total ¥630: the ¥520 weekend pass saves money, while the ¥830 weekday pass does not.

Saturday, Sunday, or holiday · mostly subway

For ¥520 per adult or ¥260 per child, ride all municipal subway lines for one day. Buy the paper ticket with cash at a station ticket machine or office. Adults using an eligible contactless card also get an automatic ¥520 cap that day, so they need not buy a paper ticket in advance. Pay separately for JR, buses, and streetcars.

Donichika Ticket
  • Subway only
  • Saturdays, Sundays, holidays, and 12/29–1/3
  • Paper ticket: cash; adult contactless: automatic cap
Weekday · many subway rides

The subway day pass costs ¥830 for adults and ¥420 for children; the paper ticket is cash only. Eligible contactless payment automatically caps adult subway fares at ¥830 from 03:00 to 02:59 the following day. Use the same card, phone, or watch throughout. The cap does not apply to buses or JR.

Day pass or contactless cap
  • Weekday day pass covers the subway only
  • Contactless cap applies to adult subway fares only
  • Compare with the sum of individual fares
Mix of JR, buses, and subway

Nationwide interoperable cards such as Suica, PASMO, ICOCA, and Kitaca work on the Sapporo subway and streetcars and on JR Hokkaido Bus, Jotetsu, and Hokkaido Chuo Bus. One card is the simplest way to cover trips to the airport, Otaru, and Soen Station too.

Nationwide compatible IC card
  • Works on JR to the airport and Otaru

Arrival and departure at the airport

If your hotel is near Sapporo Station, the JR Airport train from New Chitose Airport Station is straightforward. The non-reserved fare to Sapporo is ¥1,230. The Special Rapid takes as little as 33 minutes, Rapid 37 minutes, and daytime Semi-Rapid as little as 43 minutes; check both train type and departure time. For Odori, Susukino, or Nakajima Park, find the airport bus stop nearest your hotel. A one-way bus fare is ¥1,400 or ¥1,500 depending on the section, and road conditions affect arrival time.

The short answer

Use a nationwide compatible IC card such as Suica, ICOCA, or Kitaca for the airport, Otaru, and JR Soen Station. On days with many subway rides, compare the weekend ¥520 or weekday ¥830 day pass with individual fares. Eligible contactless cards automatically receive the same daily subway fare cap.

Reality check

Transport

For a city bus: ① Check the destination, direction, and last service on a map. ② Follow the vehicle signs, tapping your IC card at the boarding door or taking a numbered ticket if paying cash. ③ Press the stop button before your stop. ④ At the front-door fare box, tap the same IC card again or pay the fare shown for your ticket number. Boarding in the middle and exiting at the front is common, but follow the vehicle signs where it differs. JR Hokkaido Bus fare boxes do not give change, so bring ¥1,000 notes and coins.

Time

On arrival day, allow extra time to get from the international terminal to the JR station or bus stop and to check in at your city hotel. You can use an IC card for a non-reserved JR seat without a reservation, but after a late flight, check that day's train and bus hours and last departures first. Allow for baggage collection and aim for a service before the very last one.

Cost

Regular adult subway fares range from ¥210 to ¥380 one way by distance. Compare the ¥520 weekend and ¥830 weekday passes with the sum of individual fares, not just the number of rides. Paper day passes are cash only. Adults using eligible contactless cards receive the daily cap automatically; check child tickets or child fares on an IC card separately.

Safety

Winter road congestion, heavy snow, and crowded platforms can delay an airport transfer. A contactless card issued abroad may be declined, so carry an IC card or cash as a backup.

If plans change

When visiting only Sapporo Station, Odori, and Susukino

Many stretches are walkable underground. Individual IC-card fares or walking may cost less than a day pass.

When your hotel is right by an airport bus stop

Check the actual hotel stops and timetable of the airport shuttle, then compare with a JR transfer.

If snow or a cancellation makes you miss the last service

Check JR and bus service notices separately. If both have ended, look for an airport hotel and the next morning's first service. Before choosing a taxi, check the fare estimate and road conditions.

Small tip

Sapporo Station, Odori, and Susukino are close and connected by underground walkways. Before buying a day pass just because you expect three subway rides, add up the actual fares and see whether they exceed ¥520 or ¥830.

Final check before departure

  • Save your hotel's nearest station and airport bus stop on a map.
  • Check whether you have a weekend or holiday with many subway-only rides.
  • Check your IC-card balance and carry another way to pay.
  • Check first and last services and operating notices on your travel day for airport transfers and nearby day trips.
  • Check the official timetable for whether the airport bus requires a reservation and when its stops are in service. Save an alternative route too, and check whether you can switch to the JR Rapid Airport if there’s traffic congestion or a cancellation.
