At a glance

  • For 2 nights and 3 days, choose Odori and Susukino in your spare time on day one, then a market breakfast, soup curry, a café, and night views on a clear evening on day two. On departure day, set aside time for collecting luggage and airport travel first. Add Jozankei or Otaru only if you have enough time to replace a full city day.
  • Choose just one market for breakfast. Nijo Market is easy to connect on foot with Odori and the TV Tower; the Curb Market suits a day when you want to browse more seafood shops. As the Curb Market is outside downtown, change your morning route rather than visiting both markets.
  • To taste beer, use the tasting hall after visiting the museum. Self-guided viewing also costs 1,000 yen for adults; tasting is extra. Last admission is 17:30 and tasting last orders are at 18:00, so keep early afternoon free instead of fitting it in after another attraction in late afternoon. Beer garden lamb barbecue requires a separate meal reservation.
  • A seafood rice bowl for breakfast, soup curry for lunch, and lamb barbecue for dinner add up to a lot of food. Choose a small market dish or move soup curry to another day. Finish the evening with either miso ramen or a late-night dessert parfait. When ordering crab, first ask for the total including weight, cooking, and packing charges.
  • Buy souvenirs all at once on your last day at a Sapporo Station department store food hall or in Tanukikoji. Popular choices include Shiroi Koibito, Royce’ chocolate, Rokkatei butter sandwiches, potato and corn snacks, and Hokkaido dairy products.
  • On days with heavy rain or slippery snow, focus on Shiroi Koibito Park, Sapporo Factory, department stores and underground shopping areas, and museums. Check visibility and service notices before deciding on Mount Moiwa or a long-distance excursion.
  • For history and indoor exhibits, visit Historical Village of Hokkaido and the Hokkaido Museum together for half a day. For a quiet museum outing, group the Hokkaido Museum of Modern Art and the Migishi Kotaro Museum. Add a short walk through the Hokkaido University Botanic Garden after checking which areas are open seasonally.
  • At night, choose just one of Mount Moiwa, JR Tower T38, or the TV Tower, then return to Susukino or Tanukikoji. Add the Norbesa Ferris wheel, a jazz or whisky bar, or a concert only if that day’s hours or showtimes work. Sapporo Factory, COCONO SUSUKINO, and the Sapporo Station department store food halls are shopping options that offer shelter from rain and snow.
  • If your trip is long enough for another nearby excursion, Lake Shikotsu is a good choice for the lake and hot springs, ES CON Field for a game or stadium experience, and Noboribetsu for a relaxed overnight onsen stay or a day trip with a long return journey. Shakotan, Biei and Furano, and Asahikawa take longer to reach, so compare a rental car or tour with staying overnight elsewhere.
  • Distinguish downtown BARISTART from MORIHICO’s original café in Maruyama. BARISTART’s UNDER CONSTRUCTION store is on the second floor of Sanjo Mimatsu Building, Minami 3-jo Nishi 5-chome, and officially opens 10:00–18:00. For a latte, stop during a downtown walk; for a wooden building and dark-roast coffee, choose MORIHICO’s original café. It does not take reservations, so switch to a downtown branch if the wait is long.
  • Mount Moiwa’s night views depend on clouds, fog, and strong winds. The summit is colder than downtown, so bring an outer layer. Travel from Ropeway Iriguchi tram stop to the base station, then transfer between the ropeway and mini cable car. Do not read the timetable’s last uphill service as a time when you can still set out after dinner.
  • If you have already visited Otaru and have two full days beyond the basic three-night, four-day plan, choose Noboribetsu first and Jozankei second. One day combines volcanic scenery and a day bath; the other offers a valley and autumn dam views. If two hot spring days feel repetitive, or the Blue Pond is your priority, replace only the second day with Biei. These are not plans to squeeze into a departure day or a half-day in the city.
  • For Noboribetsu, take a JR limited express for about 1 hour 10 to 15 minutes, then a Donan Bus from the station for about 27 minutes. The planned 1 hour 40 minutes to 2 hours each way includes the transfer wait, not just the train. Hokuto and Suzuran trains have only reserved seats, so prepare a basic fare ticket and a reserved-seat limited express ticket. The onsen bus does not accept transport IC cards; check payment options.

Explore downtown first, then spend a separate day in each outlying area

Sapporo Station, Odori, and Susukino form a downtown corridor linked by walking routes and underground walkways. Coffee in Maruyama, the Beer Museum to the east, and Mount Moiwa to the southwest require separate journeys. Choose according to your interests and dinner reservation instead of adding all of them on the same day.

Dotted line: an easy downtown route to follow in order · Outlined dot: a separate half-day option This is a schematic for understanding the journey. It is not to scale and does not show actual elevation or road alignment.

See the travel guidance for each stop below.

  1. Sapporo Station Hotel and JR hub

A starting point for airport trains, JR lines, and the subway.

  2. Odori and Nijo Walk and underground passages

A central area for choosing the park, TV Tower, and Clock Tower after breakfast at Nijo Market.

  3. Susukino Evening and night walk

The southern end of downtown, convenient for Tanukikoji, dinner, and a late-night parfait.

  4. Maruyama · MORIHICO Half-day option to the west

A western area for the shrine, forest paths, and coffee at the original café.

  5. Moerenuma Half-day option to the northeast

This large park takes time to explore, so don’t try to squeeze it into the same day as the Beer Museum.

  6. Mount Moiwa Night views to the southwest

Before setting out, compare service status, summit visibility, and the time remaining before your dinner reservation.

  7. Beer Museum East · Viewing and tasting

Keep early afternoon free and allow waiting time before the tasting hall’s 18:00 last orders.

Route and schedule

Walk downtown after a market breakfast, then choose your evening around weather and reservations

This is an example for a full day available in the city. Include meal queues in the daytime route, and treat CONG and MORIHICO’s original café as separate journeys outside the downtown walk. If adding Mount Moiwa, allow 2–3 hours in your plan, including travel from downtown and boarding queues. Move the mountain to another night if you may be late for your lamb barbecue reservation.

Return to your hotel each day

Sample 4-day, 3-night itinerary with a downtown stay

On arrival and departure days, use only the time left around your flights. You do not need to fit the market → soup curry → café → Mount Moiwa → lamb barbecue all into one day. Fix your reserved meal time first and decide which night-viewing or lunch waits to shorten. With 4 or more nights, you can assign Otaru and Jozankei to separate days.

Day 1 · Get your bearings downtown

If you arrive in the morning, leave your luggage and walk Sapporo Station → former Hokkaido Government Office exterior → Clock Tower → Nijo Market → TV Tower and Odori Park → Tanukikoji → Susukino. If arriving in the afternoon, keep just Odori and Tanukikoji; at night, choose only dinner near your accommodation. Do not force missed downtown stops into day four. If you cannot reach Nijo Market in the morning after leaving your luggage, move the market to the next morning and visit only the park and shopping streets on day one.

Market, park, and nightlife
  • Visit Nijo Market in the morning
  • View Odori Park from the TV Tower
  • Use Tanukikoji’s covered arcade to get out of the rain or snow
Day 2 · Café or beer, and night views if the sky is clear

For forest paths and coffee, treat Maruyama, Hokkaido Jingu, and MORIHICO’s original café as one area. If you prefer a sweets factory and garden, substitute Shiroi Koibito Park; for a large park, choose Moerenuma, without adding the Beer Museum too. If beer is your priority, use daytime for museum viewing and tasting. Before setting out for Mount Moiwa in the evening, check that day’s service status, summit camera, and sunset. If there is not enough time for the mountain round trip before dinner, switch to the TV Tower or T38. Do not simply miss your reservation to delay the meal.

One daytime area · One evening choice
  • Maruyama, the shrine, and MORIHICO’s original café
  • Choose your priority: café, sweets park, or beer
  • Mount Moiwa when service, visibility, and dinner timing work
Day 3 · Otaru or Jozankei

Take the JR train to Otaru if you’re interested in the harbor, glass crafts, cafes, and sushi. Choose Jozankei if you want hot springs, a valley walk, and a slower day. If the hot spring is your main goal, first choose a facility from the Jozankei Tourism Association’s list of day-use bathing facilities. Check its reception hours, closing days, whether reservations are required, towel policy, and tattoo rules. Not all accommodations accept day visitors. Then decide which nearby stop to get off at and which return service to take. From Sapporo Station, the direct Kappa Liner takes about 1 hour and regular local buses about 1 hour 20 minutes; allow extra time for walking to the facility and traffic delays. The Kappa Liner requires a reservation, so check seats, operating dates, booking deadlines, and boarding locations in the Jotetsu official information, then reserve both ways. If the bathing hours don’t work, switch to a valley or footbath walk, or choose Otaru.

Choose just one nearby excursion
  • Otaru: canal and Sakaimachi Street
  • Jozankei: hot springs and a valley walk
  • Check return transport first
Day 4 · Souvenirs and departure

Buy souvenirs near a station close to your hotel, then pick up your bags. First leave time for the transfer to New Chitose Airport and airline check-in. Fit in a short indoor walk only if time allows. Move the Mount Moiwa night view to a clear evening no later than the night before departure. Skip it if it falls on a day when you’ll return late from an excursion.

Plan backward from your airport transfer
  • Pick up your bags and travel to the airport
  • Allow time for check-in at New Chitose Airport
  • Choose just one night for the view, between days one and three
Extra day 1: Noboribetsu after visiting Otaru

Take a morning JR limited express and Donan Bus to Noboribetsu Onsen. Visit Jigokudani, then add the Oyunuma paths only if they are open. If access is closed, skip Oyunuma and the natural footbath and stay with the village and a day bath. Dai-ichi Takimotokan accepts day-bath entry from 09:00 to 18:00, with departure by 21:00, and requires no reservation. Match the return bus and reserved-seat train before bathing.

Extra day 2: autumn Jozankei and Hoheikyo Dam

Reach Jozankei by the reserved Kappa Liner in about 60 minutes, or a regular bus in about 80 minutes. From October 3 to 25, 2026, register that day at the tourist information center for the Dam Liner in arrival order, then transfer to the paid electric bus. Allow about two hours back to the center, followed by lunch and a day bath. If the shuttle is full or canceled, stay in the onsen village. Peak foliage is not guaranteed by the date.

Alternative extra day 2: Biei instead of another hot spring

Choose Biei instead of Jozankei only if two hot spring days do not appeal and the Blue Pond matters most. Take JR via Asahikawa and Biei, then local buses to the Blue Pond and Shirahige Falls. Even the official example takes about 8 hours 25 minutes from Sapporo and back, with little local time. In October 2026, the Biyu Bus runs only on October 1 to 3 and 9 to 12. Online booking closes at 17:00 four days before. Ask the information center about last-minute seats, without counting on availability.

What to decide first

If you arrive in the morning and depart late, you can spend time downtown, at a park or museum, and on one nearby excursion. If you have less time, drop the excursion first. Choose Otaru for a harbor walk and shopping, or Jozankei for hot springs and a relaxing time in the valley. Don’t try to visit both in one day.

Reality check

Transport

JR trains take about 40 minutes between New Chitose Airport and Sapporo Station. Add time separately for getting from your hotel to the station and for airport check-in. Check JR Hokkaido for airport and Otaru routes, and operator schedules for Jozankei and local city buses, including the first and last services on your travel date. For the extra days, plan separate connections: JR and Donan Bus for Noboribetsu; an intercity bus and, if chosen, the dam shuttle and electric bus for Jozankei; two JR legs and local buses for Biei. Include a separate bus journey from the Blue Pond to Shirahige Falls rather than treating them as a short walk apart.

Time

The time you have for sightseeing during a 4-day, 3-night trip depends on your flights. Use only the time left after arrival on day one, a full downtown day on day two, one nearby excursion on day three, and the time available before your airport transfer on day four. Allow extra time for delays in winter.

Cost

Paid areas at the Clock Tower, TV Tower, Mount Moiwa, museum, and Shiroi Koibito Park each charge admission. Do not assume a single pass covers city subways, JR, suburban buses, and viewpoints; compare coverage for your actual travel dates with individual fares. Sample admission prices include 2,100 yen for an adult Mount Moiwa round trip, 2,200 yen for an adult at AOAO, and 1,000 yen for an adult self-guided Beer Museum visit. Transport passes, food, and tasting are separate. Check detailed articles and official information for discounts and age categories. For Noboribetsu, add basic fare and reserved-seat limited express tickets, the onsen bus at ¥450 per adult each way, and bathing fees. Examples are ¥550 for adults at Sagiriyu or ¥2,500 at Dai-ichi Takimotokan. Jozankei’s Dam Liner return fare of ¥1,000 and October electric bus adult return fare of ¥1,200 are separate from the bus to Sapporo and bathing. Biei’s local buses are not included in a JR pass.

Safety

Crosswalks and station entrances can be especially slippery in snowy conditions. Service on Mount Moiwa and nearby excursion buses may change in strong winds or heavy snow, so check the last return service before setting out. Follow each onsen’s rules for tattoos, towels, and photography. Do not enter closed paths at Noboribetsu. Check weather and final buses and trains for each extra day. If driving to Biei from late October onward, also consider sunset and possible icy roads.

If plans change

3 days, 2 nights

Spend the first day downtown. On day two, visit the places that interest you most among Maruyama and the Beer Museum. On day three, leave time only for a meal near your hotel, picking up your bags, and getting to the airport. If Otaru or Jozankei is your main goal, use day two for a round trip to that one place instead of downtown sightseeing. Choose a Mount Moiwa night view on the first or second night only if the return trip and weather work out.

On a day with heavy rain or snow

Connect the station, Odori, and Susukino using underground passages. Focus on Shiroi Koibito Park, Sapporo Factory, department stores, and cafes.

If you want to see more nature

Add Moerenuma Park or Jozankei, and reduce time for Otaru and downtown shopping.

Small tip

Wherever you stay—near Sapporo Station, Odori, or Susukino—you can avoid rain and snow by combining underground passages and the subway. In winter, bring waterproof shoes and traction aids; in summer, pack a light outer layer.

Final check before departure

  • Set your airline check-in deadline and target airport arrival time, then plan backward for your last day in this order: hotel → Sapporo Station → New Chitose Airport.
  • First save the station closest to your hotel: Sapporo Station, Odori, or Susukino.
  • If you’re visiting during an event period, such as the Snow Festival, summer beer gardens, or fall food festivals, check hotels and restaurants early.
  • Choose either Otaru or Jozankei, and save the last departure times for both your outbound and return trips.
  • On the day you depart for your trip, recheck operating days and closures for the Mount Moiwa Ropeway, paid attractions, and Jozankei buses.
  • In winter, bring waterproof shoes and warm layers. In summer, bring a light outer layer and rain gear.
  • Compare the Mount Moiwa summit camera and service status with your dinner reservation, and decide when to skip the mountain.
  • If eating a market rice bowl, soup curry, and lamb barbecue on the same day, reduce portion sizes. Save the parfait shop’s last-order time and your route back to your accommodation.
  • Make sure the extra two days do not overlap your departure day, and match Noboribetsu return reserved seats with the bus connections.
  • Check Noboribetsu path closures and day-bath entry, plus same-day registration for Jozankei’s Dam Liner and electric bus operation.
  • Before choosing Biei, confirm the Biyu Bus date, booking deadline and remaining seats, or connect the JR and local bus timetables.

Opening hours, festival dates, ropeway and bus schedules, and the timing of snow and fall foliage change each year. The times in this guide are for planning your route. Check official pages and JR Hokkaido and Sapporo transit trip planners again for your travel dates. Add these two excursion days only if you have already visited Otaru and have two full days separate from your departure day. In 2026, the Hoheikyo Dam Liner runs October 3 to 25 with same-day registration in arrival order. Biei’s October Biyu Bus dates are limited to October 1 to 3 and 9 to 12.
