At a glance
- The Municipal House and the House of the Black Madonna are close together, so visit them on the same morning route.
- Check opening hours to decide whether to see the exhibition inside the House of the Black Madonna or just view the exterior.
- After seeing the Cubist streetlamp at Jungmann Square, take a tram to Kovařovic Villa to avoid a long walk.
- To compare Romanesque, Gothic, or Baroque architecture, plan a separate trip to Prague Castle or Vyšehrad instead of squeezing it into this half-day.

Google MapsHow to fit it in
A good fit for anyone who wants to compare Art Nouveau’s curved ornament with the angular façades of Czech Cubism in person.
Reality check
Walk around the Old Town and New Town. After Jungmann Square, check PID for a tram from near Karlovo náměstí to Výtoň. Walk from Výtoň stop to the villa at Libušina 49/3. Tram routes may change because of construction, so check your boarding and exit stops again on the day of your visit.
Allow 4 hours for exteriors only, or a full day if you add museums and interior tours.
Viewing the exteriors from the street is free; museums, towers, and interior tours charge separately.
Do not walk backward near traffic to photograph the whole building. Check the available pedestrian space.
If plans change
Focus on reading the structure and decoration from the outside, and use a nearby architecture museum or one National Gallery exhibition as an indoor stop.
If style names feel overwhelming, spend this half-day comparing only the curves of the Municipal House with the angular exterior of the House of the Black Madonna. If you also want to see the Gothic St. Vitus Cathedral, plan it as a separate stop on your Prague Castle day.
Small tip
Instead of memorizing style names, compare the lines of the windows, roofs, entrances, and walls.
Final check before departure
- Decide first whether to take an interior tour of the Municipal House: make it the first stop only if an official tour time works for you. If tours are sold out, view the exterior from Republic Square and continue to the House of the Black Madonna.
- Use the House of the Black Madonna as your Cubist reference point: check the interior exhibition hours. If it is closed, compare the exterior with the Cubist streetlamp at Jungmann Square.
- Take a tram for the section below Vyšehrad: do not walk all the way from downtown to Kovařovic Villa. Focus on viewing the exterior, and do not disturb access to private property.
- Finish the riverside section before sunset. In rain or snow, skip Kovařovic Villa and limit the visit to indoor attractions near the Municipal House and the House of the Black Madonna.
- For a safe exterior visit, stop on the sidewalk to look. Do not enter the road or private property to frame a photo. Cross streets and board or exit trams at designated places.
Even when the interiors are closed, comparing the exteriors is enough to make the heart of this route worthwhile.
