At a glance

  • Allow plenty of time for each site in Josefov. Don’t rush through several synagogues as if checking off a list.
  • Visiting arrangements may change on Shabbat and Jewish holidays, so check the official hours before you set out.
  • At memorial sites, follow the on-site guidance about photography and conversation.
  • Even if you combine Josefov with Old Town Square, plan to arrive in Josefov before last admission.

How to fit it in

Go deeper in two or three places rather than trying to visit every synagogue. It’s best not to schedule a light activity right after the Pinkas Synagogue and cemetery.

Reality check

Transport

Walk in from Staroměstská. The sites are close to one another, so the exhibitions take more time than getting around.

Time

Allow 3 hours for the key synagogues and cemetery, or half a day if you want to explore the exhibitions carefully.

Cost

The standard ticket currently covers several synagogues and the Old Jewish Cemetery. Even if you’re short on time, choose two or three priorities within the combined ticket.

Safety

Follow guidance on clothing, photography, and silence in religious and memorial spaces, and keep pathways clear.

If plans change

If some synagogues are closed

Focus on two of the open Pinkas, Maisel, and Spanish Synagogues, plus the Old Jewish Cemetery. See closed sites from the outside instead of treating them as full visits.

If the experience feels emotionally overwhelming

Stop sightseeing after the Pinkas Synagogue and cemetery. Finish with a quiet walk along the Vltava River, rather than forcing yourself to visit another exhibition.

Small tip

If you focus only on the Golem legend, you’ll miss the community’s real lives and persecution. Read the exhibitions through their chronology and people’s experiences.

Final check before departure

  • First check what the combined ticket covers and which sites are open: the standard ticket applies to museum sites currently open, and individual and family tickets are valid for 3 days when the museum is open. You can enter each site only once, so visit the Pinkas Synagogue and cemetery when you have enough time.
  • If it’s Saturday or a Jewish holiday, go another day: Check the official schedule for closures and seasonal closing times. If sites are closed, switch to Old Town or the National Museum.
  • Use the Visitor Center at Maiselova 15 or an official ticket outlet: If you need a discount, check whether the Visitor Center issues it. Compare online and on-site terms for standard tickets.
  • Know the rules for memorial sites: Photography is allowed for personal use only, without flash, lighting, or a tripod. Follow any stricter instructions on site.
  • Start your walking visit at the first synagogue you plan to enter. Check the ticket options for age, student eligibility, and included sites. Before paying, ask whether any site or guided program outside the combined ticket costs extra.

Opening hours at individual synagogues may vary around religious holidays and conservation work.
