At a glance
- Walking around the castle complex and visiting historic buildings indoors have different admission requirements, so decide which buildings you want to see before buying a ticket.
- For a basic half-day route, visit the interiors of the cathedral and Golden Lane. Add just one of the Old Royal Palace or St. George’s Basilica, depending on what is open and how much time you have on the day.
- If the Old Royal Palace or another historic building is closed on your visit day, choose another open place within the castle instead of expanding your route to a different area.
- Allow for security screening and last admission times. If you start late in the afternoon, limit yourself to one interior visit.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Take a tram to the upper entrance - visit the square and the interior of St. Vitus Cathedral - add the Old Royal Palace only if it is open that day and time allows
Visit the interior of Golden Lane - add St. George’s Basilica if time allows - descend via the eastern steps
Places and meals
Worship areas and paid visitor areas are separate, so plan your entry route first.
Google MapsA key interior for seeing the castle’s political history and Vladislav Hall.
Google MapsThe indoor spaces are narrow and connected, so visit this last when it is crowded.
Google MapsHow to fit it in
For a first visit, limit yourself to two or three paid interiors and the castle views. You cannot see every part of the castle in half a day.
Reality check
You can avoid much of the uphill walk by entering directly at Pražský hrad or starting at Pohořelec and walking downhill.
Allow 4–5 hours if visiting interiors, or 2–3 hours for the squares and exteriors.
Each ticket circuit includes different buildings, so choose only a circuit that covers the interiors you want to visit.
Leave large bags behind and wear shoes suited to cobblestones and stairs.
If plans change
Focus on one accessible area of St. Vitus Cathedral, then connect Hradčany Square, Nový Svět, and the castle views on a free outdoor route.
Make a round trip from the Pražský hrad stop and skip the descent via the eastern steps to visit only the flatter central area of the castle complex.
Small tip
To reduce uphill walking, arrive by tram at the top and walk down toward Malá Strana.
Final check before departure
- Separate free access from paid interiors: walking around the castle grounds is different from paid visits to places such as the Old Royal Palace and Golden Lane. First choose two buildings you want to see, then check the official page to make sure the ticket circuit includes them.
- Enter shortly after opening or later in the afternoon: allow plenty of time before last admission for security screening and tour groups. If there is a special event or a building is closed that day, adjust your route before buying a ticket.
- Choose your Line 22 tram stop based on where you are staying: decide whether to get off at Pohořelec and walk downhill or get off at Malostranské náměstí and walk uphill, based on your energy and next destination. This route is best without luggage.
- If the cathedral is crowded, switch to the gardens and Malá Strana: if the line is long or the interior is closed, walk through the castle’s south gardens and down Nerudova Street to Malá Strana. Follow on-site directions about photography in restricted areas.
The Old Royal Palace closure notice for September 3–October 1, 2026, is for a past period. Check the official page again for buildings open on your visit date, special events, and last admission time before choosing two interiors.
