At a glance
- Cross Charles Bridge early after sunrise. On a day when you want to spend time taking photos, focus on either the Old Town side or the Malá Strana side.
- Rather than stopping for long on the bridge, take a brief look near the railing and leave room for people walking by.
- If you’re continuing to the castle, decide based on your energy whether to walk uphill from the end of the bridge or take a tram.
- In the evening, it’s a shorter walk to view the bridge from the riverbank or Kampa Island than to return to the bridge for the view.

Google MapsHow to fit it in
Unless you’re aiming for an early-morning photo, two short crossings—before breakfast and on an evening walk—are better than one midday crossing.
Reality check
There’s no public transport on the bridge itself, so use the Staroměstská or Malostranské náměstí stops on either side as your starting point.
A straight crossing takes 15 minutes, but allow 60–90 minutes if you’re visiting a tower, looking at the statues, and stopping at Kampa Island.
The bridge itself is free. Visiting a tower for the view is optional and costs extra.
Don’t stop suddenly in the crowd or leave your belongings on the railing.
If plans change
Instead of entering the bridge by the Old Town Bridge Tower, head south along the riverbank and cross west on Legií Bridge. After crossing, walk north to reach Kampa Island. This riverside detour offers views of the river while avoiding the crowds on Charles Bridge.
Put off crossing the bridge. Take a short look at the towers on either side and the lanes in Malá Strana, then add the crossing to your route from your accommodation the next morning.
Small tip
Don’t linger alone in the dark just because there are fewer people. Plan your route back to your accommodation.
Final check before departure
- Choose the time to suit your plans: Go early, while it’s bright and less crowded, to see the statues and towers up close. If you want night views, take a short walk later while you still have a way back to your accommodation.
- Choose your direction based on what’s next: Cross west from the Old Town if you’re heading to the castle and Malá Strana. Cross east from Malá Strana if you’re returning for a night walk in the Old Town. Don’t make a round trip just for the same view.
- If traveling with children, using a wheelchair, or carrying large bags, check crowd levels first. If the route is too crowded, compare nearby bridges such as Mánes Bridge and public transit options.
- Keep your visit short in heavy rain or strong winds. Put off crossing on wet cobblestones, and visit nearby lanes on either side or one indoor place you can reserve.
- If you plan to visit a tower, check its opening hours and last admission for your visit date. Allow separate time for crossing the bridge and visiting the paid viewpoint. Skip the tower if you have another reservation soon.
Spend less time on the bridge if an event, photo shoot, or maintenance work narrows the walkway.
