At a glance

  • In the morning, start with Josefov sites that have the earliest last entry. After lunch, head toward Old Town Square and Charles Bridge.
  • Don’t try to see every synagogue. Leave time for the exhibits that interest you and the Old Jewish Cemetery.
  • Don’t schedule waiting in front of the Astronomical Clock and a museum visit for the same time.
  • On religious holidays or closure days, replace Josefov with a walk through the Old Town lanes and along the river.

How to fit it in

The most reliable order is to make Josefov the focus of your morning and use Old Town Square as a connecting point in the afternoon.

Reality check

Transport

Starting at Staroměstská station lets you visit Josefov and the Old Town on foot.

Time

Allow about 3 hours for Josefov and 3–4 hours for the Old Town and riverfront.

Cost

A combined ticket covers several synagogues and the cemetery. If you have limited time, prioritize within the sites covered by the combined ticket rather than counting on individual-site tickets.

Safety

Keep your bag closed in crowds around the square and narrow lanes, and don’t block the flow of pedestrians.

If plans change

When Josefov is closed

Instead of going inside the synagogues, connect Old Town Square, the exterior of the Church of Our Lady before Týn, the area around the Clementinum, and the riverfront. Visit Josefov another morning when it’s open.

When the square is packed

Skip the Astronomical Clock on the hour, detour through the lanes around Ungelt and the Convent of St. Agnes, then return to the square around sunset.

Small tip

In Josefov, treat the cemetery and memorial sites with respect, not as photo attractions, and follow the posted visitor guidelines.

Final check before departure

  • Start Josefov before entry times: Check combined tickets online or at the visitor center at Maiselova 15, then visit the Pinkas Synagogue and cemetery first. Ticket sales end before closing, so prioritize the indoor sites over the crowds around the Astronomical Clock.
  • Change the order on Saturdays and holidays: When the Jewish Museum is closed, switch to Old Town Square, Charles Bridge, the Clementinum, or other outdoor and indoor sites. Visit Josefov on the morning of the next day it’s open.
  • Use Staroměstská station as your reference point for the return: It’s about 3 minutes from the synagogue area. In crowded squares, keep your wallet and phone in a front pocket, and take a main street back to the station instead of a dark lane.
  • Budget separately for the combined ticket and tower visits: Sites included in the Josefov combined ticket are separate from Old Town towers and City Hall admission. Choose the one viewpoint you most want to visit and calculate your total admission costs.

Whether synagogues and exhibition spaces are open varies with religious schedules and conservation work.
