At a glance

  • Westfield Chodov connects to Chodov Station on Metro Line C. It’s a good choice for a day when you want to shop for clothes and have a meal in one place, but it takes too long to get there for a quick grocery run from the Old Town.
  • Nový Smíchov is in the Anděl Station area on Metro Line B. Start here when you want to compare groceries such as mustard, spices, jam, and wine at a large supermarket.
  • Palladium Praha is close to Náměstí Republiky Station on Metro Line B. It’s handy between Old Town or train-station plans, but because it’s on a tourist route, you may have fewer chances to compare prices and selection with other large supermarkets.
  • Centrum Černý Most and Metropole Zličín are large malls near the ends of Metro Line B, while Arkády Pankrác is in the Pankrác Station area on Line C. Choose one only if it fits your accommodation, airport transfer, or local itinerary.

For shopping in Prague, one mall that fits your accommodation and transit route is enough

Palladium in the center, Nový Smíchov in Anděl to the west, and Chodov to the southeast serve different routes. Choose one that fits your purpose instead of traveling between malls to compare them.

If groceries are your priority, start at Anděl

One shopping trip for your purpose

One grocery-shopping trip is usually enough for Czech food products. Schedule it on your way back to your accommodation or the day before departure so you don’t have to keep sightseeing in the Old Town with bags full of jars.

For grocery shopping

Accommodation → Nový Smíchov · Anděl → Check labels and expiration dates at the supermarket → Drop off your bags at your accommodation → Evening plans.

For a large shopping center

Westfield Chodov → Meal and clothing shopping → Return to the city center on Line C. Leave plenty of time for the return trip if you have a lot of shopping bags.

For a quick grocery stop between Old Town plans

Náměstí Republiky → Palladium → Accommodation or train station. The last day is a good time to pack glass jars and wine in your checked baggage.

Food and restaurants

  • Kremžská hořčice is a sweet, tangy mustard with whole mustard seeds. It goes well with sausages, sandwiches, and potato dishes. Plnotučná hořčice is a basic Czech-style mustard; heat and sweetness vary by brand.
  • Křen is bottled horseradish. It’s served with meat and smoked fish, but some products need refrigeration, so check the storage instructions and how long you’ll be traveling.
  • At local supermarkets, plum spread is made from plums cooked down to a thick consistency. It works with bread, yogurt, and pancakes, and can also be used in pork sauces.
  • Majoránka (marjoram), kmín (caraway seeds), and koření na guláš (goulash spice mix) are lightweight and unlikely to break. For spice mixes, check the label for broth or meat ingredients.
  • Spices for making utopenci or nakládaný hermelín are used to prepare Czech pub snacks. In Korea, you can also adapt them for pickled mushrooms or tofu instead of sausage.
  • If you’re looking for Czech honey, check the country-of-origin label on the jar. For liquids and glass jars, consider both carry-on rules and the risk of breakage.
  • Convenience products like Bramborák směs (potato pancake mix), houbová omáčka (mushroom sauce), and svíčková omáčka (creamy vegetable sauce) are easy to prepare, but ingredients such as meat, broth, and dairy vary by product. Read the label if you’re buying them as gifts.

How to fit it in

For comparing groceries and wine in one stop, start with Nový Smíchov by Anděl Station. For clothing, restaurants, and a large shopping center, Westfield Chodov is convenient because it connects to Chodov Station. For a quick stop in the Old Town, Palladium by Náměstí Republiky Station is a practical choice.

Reality check

Transport

Save the metro station name along with the mall name to avoid confusion. Westfield Chodov is at Chodov on Line C; Nový Smíchov is near Anděl on Line B; Palladium is near Náměstí Republiky on Line B; and Arkády Pankrác is near Pankrác on Line C. After shopping, consider the weight of glass jars and transfers on the way back to your accommodation.

Time

Allow 45–90 minutes for grocery shopping, or 3 hours or more if you’re also eating and shopping for clothes at a large mall. If you’re shopping on departure day, leave time to organize your bags before heading to the airport.

Cost

Spices, mustard, and plum spread are lightweight and keep at room temperature, making them a good balance between price and ease of packing. Before buying wine, honey, or sauces, calculate the weight of the glass and check that you have room in your checked baggage. Prices vary by store and promotion, so compare them.

Safety

Quarantine and declaration requirements for processed foods containing meat or broth, dairy products, honey, and other items can vary by product, country of origin, and how they’re processed when entering Korea. Keep the original packaging, and check the latest traveler import guidance from the Korea Customs Service and Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency before departure. Liquids are also subject to airline security rules. Pack fragile jars carefully to prevent breakage.

If plans change

If you only have one hour to shop

Go only to Palladium near your accommodation or the Old Town, or to a nearby neighborhood supermarket. Don’t make a round trip to a large mall on the outskirts.

If you only have carry-on baggage

Choose non-liquid, unbreakable items such as spices, tea bags, and snacks. For glass jars, wine, and honey, check airline security rules, then leave them behind or pack them in checked baggage.

If it’s hard to read the ingredients

Prioritize single-ingredient spices and sealed snacks. Hold off on sauces and soup mixes that contain meat, broth, or gelatin.

Small tip

At the supermarket, reading labels matters more than deciding what to buy. If you’re looking for a gift without meat or broth ingredients, check the ingredient list for words like masový (meat), vývar (broth), and želatina (gelatin). Wrap glass jars in clothing and pack them in checked baggage.

Final check before departure

  • Choose one mall that fits your accommodation, airport route, and sightseeing plans.
  • Leave room in your checked baggage and packing material for glass jars and liquids.
  • Check the ingredients, allergens, expiration date, and storage instructions on the label.
  • Before bringing food into Korea, check the latest requirements and declaration instructions from the Korea Customs Service and Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency.

Store lineups, supermarket tenants, and opening hours can change. Grocery shopping usually doesn’t require a reservation, but check each store’s policies for experiences or restaurant bookings. Check mall websites for current tenants, and before bringing food into Korea, review the latest traveler guidance from the Korea Customs Service and the Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency, along with airline security rules.
