- When comparing traditional lagers with a range of taps, choose your first beer based on the listed alcohol content, pour size, and price rather than a familiar name.
- If you don’t want another round, ask for the check instead of waiting with an empty glass.
- Check the number of drinks and any food or service charges on the bill before deciding on a tip.
- For an evening pub, choose one on the same side of the river as your accommodation or along the same night tram route to simplify the trip back.

How to fit it in
A Prague pub outing lasts until you’re back at your accommodation, not just until your first beer. If you haven’t planned your nighttime ride, choose a place nearby.
Reality check
Save the night tram or bus number and your stop near your accommodation; don’t rely on the metro being open late.
Allow 2 hours for dinner and one or two drinks, and avoid an early start the next day.
Check the pour size and price when you order, then verify the number of drinks and any service charges when you pay.
Set a limit for how much you’ll drink, and don’t accept rides from strangers when heading home alone.
If plans change
Don’t wait a long time at the entrance. Head to a second pub you’ve saved on a well-lit main street and along your route home.
Order a nonalcoholic beer or sparkling water, enjoy the food and brewing culture, and head back while public transit is still frequent.
Small tip
Choose a place with clear menus, prices, and brewery information over one with lots of tourist touts.
Final check before departure
- Check the menu and payment details before your first drink: see whether you order at the table or bar, and whether the menu lists a card minimum or service charge. Compare any extra orders with the receipt, and ask about unfamiliar charges before paying.
- Decide how much you’ll drink before focusing on alcohol content: if you have an early visit planned the next day, choose a small pour or just one pub. Don’t linger on an empty stomach; order dinner and water so you can make clear-headed decisions about getting home.
- Plan your ride home first: check the operating hours and last connections for the tram or metro to your accommodation on PID. If you use a ride-hailing service late at night, choose a well-lit pickup point where a car can stop, and refuse rides offered by strangers.
- If it’s full, try another pub near the same station: check whether popular pubs take reservations, and if the line is long, move to your second choice near the same metro station. Avoid late-night trips in the opposite direction from your accommodation.
Beer gardens may close depending on the weather, so have a nearby indoor pub as a backup.
