At a glance

  • Start by choosing either the overland geological trail at High Island Reservoir East Dam or a boat tour departing from Sai Kung. At East Dam, you can see volcanic rock columns and the landscape around the dam from a trail; a boat takes you to the sea-facing cliffs. It’s not true that you can only see the geopark by boat. Rather than trying to fit in both options on the same day, take your time with one route.
  • For public transport to East Dam, take bus 94 from Sai Kung town to Pak Tam Chung, then transfer to green minibus 9A. According to official information, route 9A runs on weekends and public holidays, so don’t rely on the same plan on a weekday. A taxi from Sai Kung or Pak Tam Chung is another option, but decide in advance how you’ll get a ride back. Though it may look close on a map, this is a full-day round trip from the city.
  • The short East Dam visit and the Po Pin Chau viewpoint trail are different routes. The viewpoint trail is about 2 km round trip, with more than 200 m of elevation change and about 2 hours of walking; it includes stairs and slopes. A prior-registration pilot applies to this section from 09:00 to 17:00 on October 1–7, 2026. Check the Klook registration linked from the official geopark information. For later dates, check whether the system is still in effect.

Overland day

Choose between an overland route and a boat

What to ask when choosing a boat tour

Not every boat in Sai Kung is part of one official tour. Compare the operator’s departure point, the waters actually visited, trip duration, safety equipment and insurance, and cancellation and refund terms in bad weather. A regular ferry to an island and a sightseeing boat that visits the cliffs serve different purposes. Prices vary by group size, route, and package, so ask for a direct quote. Don’t pay cash upfront based only on an offer from a tout.

Don’t set out without a way back

Plan to set aside about 8–10 hours for round-trip transport, your chosen route, and a meal in Sai Kung. Bring water, food, and sun protection, and don’t climb coastal cliffs or restricted rock areas. Set a turn-back time so a long walk from East Dam doesn’t cause you to miss the last minibus or your prebooked ride. If boat service is suspended, assess separately whether the overland route is safe that day. If there’s a strong-wind or thunderstorm warning, cancel the geopark visit and switch to an indoor activity in the city.

How to fit it in

Leave downtown in the morning and head to Sai Kung, then visit only one place: your booked boat tour or the east dam. Trying to fit both into one day leaves little room for boarding, driving, and getting back.

Reality check

Transport

A possible overland route to East Dam is bus 94 from Sai Kung → Pak Tam Chung → minibus 9A on weekends and public holidays. On weekdays or in bad weather, confirm an option such as a taxi that can also get you back.

Time

Many boat tours take half a day, but round-trip travel from downtown and meals will fill the day. Allow at least half a day for the east dam too, with extra time for getting there and back. Confirm each tour’s departure and final return times when you book.

Cost

For the overland route, check round-trip bus, minibus, or taxi fares. For a boat, check the operator’s actual quote and cancellation terms. Meals and backup transport are extra.

Safety

Don’t go boating or hiking in rough seas, strong winds, extreme heat, or thunderstorms. Be careful not to step onto slippery rock for photos, and cancel if there is an official weather warning.

If plans change

Sai Kung and the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark: if boat tours are suspended

Skip the boat and switch to a coastal walk and a meal in Sai Kung town. Choose the east dam as an alternative only if both ground transportation and the weather are suitable.

Sai Kung and the Hong Kong UNESCO Global Geopark: if there’s a weather warning

Skip the geopark and switch to an indoor museum visit.

Small tip

If the boat is your priority, confirm your tour booking first and get the exact meeting point at Sai Kung Public Pier. If the dam is your priority, plan your return taxi or minibus route first.

Final check before departure

  • Choose between a short East Dam visit and the Po Pin Chau trail
  • Check 9A operating days or arrange a taxi for the return
  • Check the dates when Po Pin Chau registration applies and any weather warnings
  • Prepare water, food, and sun protection, and decide when to turn back

The Po Pin Chau section is in a prior-registration pilot period from 09:00 to 17:00 on 2026-10-01–07. Recheck the 9A operating days, weather, and registration requirements for your visit date.
