At a glance
- In 2–3 hours, see the square and lanes plus one indoor attraction. Allow half a day if you want to explore both the museum and underground passages in depth.
- The official 3 km route is a straightforward walk through the centre of the Old Town. Extend it to 5 km only if you want to see the town walls and river views.
- Kotnov Tower may be closed depending on the season and day of the week. Keeping the tower as your last-choice stop makes the rest of your route more flexible.

Tábor’s Old Town, Starting from the Square
Half-Day Itinerary
The times below are suggested for planning. Adjust your schedule based on the official visitor information for your date, including actual opening hours and last admission for the museum, underground passages, and tower.
At Žižkovo náměstí, first take in the square and the exterior of the Old Town Hall. See the central fountain, the Jan Žižka memorial, and the burgher houses around the square, then choose between the museum and a walk through the lanes.
- The square and historic building exteriors
- Save the 3 km or 5 km walking map from the official website
Visit the Hussite exhibition at the Hussite Museum in the Old Town Hall, about the Hussites, a 15th-century Czech religious reform movement. Allow about 60 minutes for the exhibition alone, at least around 100 minutes if you add the underground passages, and about 2 hours if you also visit the Gothic Hall. For a half-day itinerary, prioritize either the exhibition or the underground passages. The passages began as cellars built beneath houses in the 15th century.
- Prioritize either the Hussite exhibition or the underground passages
- Check opening hours and entry arrangements for the underground passages
Take a relaxed walk through nearby lanes and past historic houses. Have a meal during this part of the route. If you have limited time, keep the walk around the square and skip the interior visit to Kotnov Tower.
- Old Town lanes and burgher houses
- Lunch or a café break
Kotnov Tower and Bechyně Gate are remnants of Tábor’s old fortifications. The exhibition inside Bechyně Gate covers the city’s history from prehistoric times to the Thirty Years’ War. The tower has many stairs and seasonal opening days vary, so if it is closed, see the exterior and finish with the 3 km walk.
- The exhibition at Bechyně Gate or Kotnov Tower
- If closed, see the exterior and nearby stretch of the town walls
If you have the time and energy, extend the walk to 5 km by adding a stretch along the town walls and views toward the Lužnice River. This section can be an alternative on days when the tower is closed. If it rains, choose an indoor attraction or shorten the walk to 3 km. If you walk the walls, check for slippery paths and sunset time.
- A stretch along the town walls
- River views toward Garnet Rock

Google MapsHow to Choose What to Visit
If you are interested in Hussite history and underground spaces, start with the Hussite Museum. If you are more interested in architecture and city views, spend more time walking around the square and lanes, and add an interior visit to Kotnov Tower only on a day it is open.
Reality check
Travel between the station and Old Town, and the last return service, vary depending on your departure city and visit date. If using public transport, check the walking or bus connection from the station to the square. If driving, also check parking locations and rules.
Allow 2–3 hours for the square and lanes, or about 4–5 hours if you include the museum or underground passages and Kotnov Tower. Choose the 5 km route if you have time to add the town walls and river views.
Admission areas and prices may differ for the museum, underground passages, and Kotnov Tower. Check the official ticketing or visitor information for your date to see what is included and whether discounts apply.
The underground passages and tower stairs, as well as paths along the town walls after rain, can be slippery. Wear shoes with good grip, and check whether you can store large bags before your visit.
If plans change
Use the square and 3 km walk as your baseline, and decide whether to add the town walls and river views based on the weather and time you have left.
See the square and one museum, and leave Kotnov and the 5 km extension for another visit.
Small tip
Official tourist information lists the church observation tower as closed until further notice. This does not mean the entire church is closed, but check whether the tower has reopened before adding the climb to your itinerary.
Final check before departure
- Check the opening hours, last admission, and available tour languages separately for the Hussite Museum and underground passages.
- Check whether Kotnov Tower and Bechyně Gate are open on your visit date. If they are closed, switch to a walk past the exteriors.
- Choose either the 3 km or 5 km route and save the walking map from the tourist information centre or official website.
- Before you leave, check your arrival station, parking, return service, and whether you can store large bags.
Opening hours for the museum, underground passages, and Kotnov Tower vary by season and day of the week. In particular, notices say Kotnov opens in October on weekends, public holidays, and during the autumn school holiday, so check again for your visit date. The tourist information centre is closed on weekends from October through April, so it is a good idea to check the official website for a walking map and current information in advance.
