At a glance
- For a first day trip, Kutná Hora is the most straightforward choice. Visit St. Barbara’s Cathedral and the historic center as one area, then decide whether to add Sedlec based on local travel time.
- In Plzeň, you can combine a brewery tour with Republic Square and St. Bartholomew’s Cathedral, making it a good choice for a day that includes both beer and city sights.
- Choose Litoměřice or Tábor for a relaxed walk among small squares and lanes. Choose Olomouc if you want to see everyday life in a university city and don’t mind a longer round trip.
- Terezín is a visit for remembrance and learning, so don’t rush through it by adding other attractions. For a day trip, check the last entry time and return service before planning the outbound trip.
Choose what you want to do there before choosing a faraway destination

Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Pick one focus for the day: castles, architecture, remembrance, a medieval town, or river views.
Calculate how long you’ll actually have at the destination, allowing for the main attraction’s last admission and round-trip travel from Prague.
If you won’t have enough time at the destination or the main attraction is sold out, don’t force in another destination. Stay in Prague instead.

Google MapsHow to fit it in
If you’re choosing just one day trip, pick Kutná Hora; if you want to combine beer with a city center, pick Plzeň. If you liked Plzeň’s city atmosphere, Olomouc is another option, but the longer round trip from Prague means you’ll need an early start.
Reality check
Plan the round-trip train or bus from Prague, the last return service, and travel from the local stop to the attractions together. For Plzeň, Kutná Hora, and Tábor, check train schedules; for Liberec and Karlovy Vary, compare bus options too.
Allow about 8–10 hours for Kutná Hora, Plzeň, and Tábor, and 10 hours or more for Olomouc, Český Krumlov, and Karlovy Vary. For a farther destination, switch to an overnight stay or choose a closer city if you can’t spend at least 5 hours there.
Budget for round-trip transport and one main admission ticket. Treat local tours and meals as optional extras.
Save an earlier return option instead of relying on the very last service.
If plans change
If you’re set on visiting a castle interior, look for an available tour time at another castle. If you mainly want town scenery, switch to Mělník or Litoměřice, where reservations are less of a concern.
Skip the long-distance day trip and visit Prague’s Vyšehrad fortifications and Letná viewpoint to enjoy history and scenery closer to the city.
Small tip
Even if places look close on a map, the station may be far from the old town, brewery, or cathedral. Before checking round-trip tickets, factor in the last entry time for the main attraction and travel from the station to your first stop.
Final check before departure
- Book your Pilsen brewery tour first: note the tour’s start and end times and travel from the station to the brewery, then add a walk around Republic Square afterward.
- For religious architecture, plan for both parts of Kutná Hora. St. Barbara’s Cathedral and Sedlec are some distance apart, so include local transport and the last admission time when calculating how long you’ll have to visit.
- For a quiet city walk, choose Litoměřice or Tábor: picking one main square and one indoor stop makes a half-day visit manageable. Adding Terezín turns it into a full day focused on a memorial visit.
- For a more urban feel, choose Olomouc: the round trip from Prague takes a long time, so check the first departure and last return. If there isn’t enough time to explore the cathedral, squares, and cafés at a relaxed pace, save it for another trip.
- For Český Krumlov, start by calculating how much time you’ll have at the destination. If it’s hard to allow about 5 hours there after accounting for round-trip travel time, stay overnight or choose somewhere closer.
Travel times, transfers, and opening hours vary by date and season. Search for your travel date’s round trip on Czech Railways or IDOS, and check each brewery’s, cathedral’s, or museum’s official booking page for last entry times and closure days.
