At a glance
- Instead of looking for new, used, and random items all at once, choose a series and item first, then focus on one shopping district.
- In Akihabara, check Animate for new items and reservation pickups; go to Mandarake Complex only if you want to browse secondhand goods. If you choose Ikebukuro, start at Animate Ikebukuro Main Store.
- For used items, check that the price tag matches the item, and inspect the box, replacement parts, and condition notes before paying. Stock and condition reflect what is currently on display, so don’t plan to chase items across other shopping districts.
- Random items don’t guarantee the character you want. Compare the price of a used single item with your limit on random purchases, and stop when you reach your limit.
- If you can’t find what you want, check the departments on other floors of the same store or leave the purchase for your next visit instead of rushing to another shopping district. Plan your time based on the floor-by-floor department information and event entry requirements listed in official store guides.
- Reservation pickup is different from an ordinary in-store purchase. Check the pickup location, deadline, and required proof on your order confirmation screen. Don’t pay for a reserved item if the pickup dates don’t fit your time in Japan. Figures can come in large boxes, so factor in how you’ll carry them to your hotel and how much room you have in your airline baggage allowance.

Google MapsHow to fit it in
Write down what you’re looking for and compare prices at about two stores in one district. Buy bulky items last and keep your receipts together.
Reality check
Limit yourself to one shopping district per day. After buying a large figure or books, consider where the lockers are and how crowded the transfers to your hotel may be.
Allow 2–3 hours to visit two stores in one shopping district, plus 30 minutes to check secondhand condition and tax-free paperwork. Decide in advance when you need to finish shopping in the district and return to your hotel. If you cannot find what you are looking for, stop shopping at that time.
Set a spending limit by item type rather than by series, and compare the number of random items you might buy with the price of a used single item. For a large figure, include shipping and baggage costs to work out the real price. Keep your receipt; it can be difficult to explain a condition issue without one.
For safe shopping, don’t open sealed items before paying, and don’t leave your bags in narrow aisles. Check the parts and condition of expensive used items with a staff member, and don’t carry your purchases to another district late at night.
If plans change
If an item is sold out or a used item’s condition is below expectations, remove it from your list instead of buying a random item as a substitute.
If you’re tired or can’t find what you want, stop moving between districts, check online stock, and head back.
Small tip
Used-item grading and standards for missing parts vary by store, and random items don’t guarantee the character you want.
Final check before departure
- Choose just one district per day: Akihabara or Ikebukuro.
- Check the official store pages for opening hours, events, and reservation pickup requirements on your visit date.
- Write down the series, items, maximum price, and number of random items you’re willing to buy.
Secondhand grades, what counts as a complete set, and sales terms for randomized items vary by store and product. Check the specific store's stock, prices, and grading directly before your visit.
