At a glance
- On the west side, check which viewpoints and high-rise buildings are currently open, including the Tokyo Metropolitan Government Building. Check same-day opening, security, and crowd notices rather than relying on old information that a viewpoint is free.
- The east side has department stores, cinemas, restaurants, and Kabukicho. Unless you have a show or meal planned, there’s no need to spend a long time wandering the nightlife district.
- Shinjuku Gyoen’s opening hours and last-admission cutoff are earlier than the hours of the evening entertainment area. If you include the garden, plan for the morning or daytime, and don’t try to combine it with both the west-side viewpoints and the east side.
- If you’re taking a highway bus or leaving for Hakone, check the terminal location and boarding level the day before. Allow extra time to get from one side of Shinjuku Station to a terminal on the other.

Google MapsHow to fit it in
Choose one daytime focus: west-side views or the garden and shopping on the east side. End with either a reserved meal or a show. If you visit Kabukicho, stick to public areas on main streets when your destination and route back to your accommodation are clear.
Reality check
JR, subway, private rail, and bus terminals are spread out. Avoid changing between different arrival and departure lines repeatedly in one day. During the day, locate the ticket gate you’ll use to return to your accommodation.
Allow 3–5 hours for a daytime plan on either the west or east side, 2 hours for a meal or show, and 30–60 minutes to cross the station and find your way. If you schedule both a garden visit and a viewpoint visit at a specific time on the same day, leave a 60-minute buffer between them.
Check whether the free observation deck is currently open. If you choose Shinjuku Gyoen, include the garden admission fee; calculate any other paid exhibits, performances, and meals separately. Ask about cover charges, service fees, and minimum orders at nightlife venues before entering, and do not buy unofficial discount tickets.
Avoid touts, excessive charges, leaving drinks unattended, and drinking too much. Use established venues and well-lit streets. If you have a problem, move somewhere safe and contact the police or a tourist information center instead of arguing at the venue.
If plans change
Don’t look for another high-rise on the spur of the moment. Finish with an architectural walk on the west side and an indoor meal. Go to Shinjuku Gyoen only if you can arrive before last admission with enough time to explore.
Cancel your plans and return to a restaurant in the station complex or the area around your accommodation. Don’t engage with touts or go down side streets to investigate.
Small tip
If you need to cross the station, check the official east–west connecting passage and its opening hours rather than relying on the straight-line distance on a map. When meeting someone, specify the exit number, ticket gate, or building floor.
Final check before departure
- Choose one daytime focus: west side or east side
- Check official hours and booking information for viewpoints, the garden, and shows
- Save the ticket gate, last train, and nighttime route for your journey back to your accommodation
Operating hours for viewpoints, the garden, station passages, and nightlife venues can change. Check official facility, railway, and Tokyo visitor information on the day, and follow any on-site restrictions.
