Suppose checkout for accommodation in Japan shows JPY 30,000 alongside the equivalent in KRW. Choose JPY 30,000. Decline any option to pay or convert the amount to won. The country examples above describe the usual case where the accommodation charges in its local currency.
When the price is shown in won
The won price shown while you search for accommodation may be for comparison only. Seeing a price in won does not mean you have already chosen to pay in won. On the final screen, check that it says your card will be charged JPY 30,000. Changing only the display currency on the search screen is not enough.
Why does paying in won cost more?
DCC is a service that converts a foreign-currency amount into the cardholder’s home currency before charging the card. For a card billed in Korean won, an offer to convert to KRW is DCC. Visa says the exchange rate and any additional costs should be shown, and that customers must be able to decline the conversion.
If Booking.com is headquartered in the Netherlands, should I choose EUR?
No. Booking.com’s terms distinguish between the currency charged by the accommodation and a service that converts the charge to the customer’s currency. The customer-currency payment service may include conversion costs. If an accommodation in Japan charges in yen, choose yen. The same rule applies even if the foreign company’s name appears on your card statement.
Paying in the local currency does not eliminate every fee. Visa and your Korean card issuer may charge foreign-use fees depending on your card. The Korea Credit Finance Association says the additional cost for overseas payments converted to won is about 3–8%, but that does not mean the same rate applies to every Booking.com reservation.
현지 통화가 아닌 다른 통화가 나온다면
Check separately only when the accommodation charges in a currency other than its local currency. For example, if the booking terms for accommodation in Switzerland say the charge will be in EUR and the payment options are EUR and KRW, choose EUR. There is no need to convert it again to CHF. If several foreign currencies are shown and you cannot tell which one is the original charge, stop checkout and ask the accommodation or Booking.com.
If KRW is the only option
Ask Booking.com customer service whether you can pay without converting the charge to won. You could also look for a pay-at-the-property rate, but first compare the room price and free-cancellation terms, as they may differ.
결제 후 알아둘 점
A won estimate in your card app does not mean the transaction was approved in won. Check the original transaction currency in your overseas transaction details.
Check whether you are paying now or whether the accommodation will charge you later. With pay-later bookings, the exchange rate at the time of the actual charge may make the won amount different from the estimate you saw when booking. If you cancel, the refunded won amount may also differ because of exchange rates and card issuer processing.

Hotel deposits, city taxes, and extra accommodation charges may be paid separately from the online booking. Check for an offer to convert to won on the payment terminal at the property, too. If you also book transportation or a rental car, check the currency for each transaction separately.
Turning on your card issuer’s block for overseas payments converted to won can help prevent mistakes. This feature does not prevent payment fraud. Compare the original transaction currency and amount in your card approval details with the selected currency and charged amount on the saved checkout screen. If either differs, contact your card issuer and attach the checkout screen. It is also helpful to check customer service hours and how to call from overseas before departure.
