Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Continue from Buda Castle toward Fisherman’s Bastion and Matthias Church. Choose the funicular, bus, or a walk uphill based on service and your energy that day.
Start your riverside walk at the Chain Bridge, pass Shoes on the Danube Bank, and continue to Parliament. At the memorial, prioritize giving people room to pass and observe a moment of silence over taking photos.
Visit St. Stephen’s Basilica and the Hungarian State Opera near Andrássy Avenue. Tour routes at the Opera may change on performance and rehearsal days, so check the official information first.

Google MapsChoose one: Széchenyi Thermal Bath if you want to relax, or Central Market Hall if you want to browse the market.
Google MapsHow to fit it in
A good fit for first-time visitors who want to see the castle, riverfront, and central sights without missing the highlights. The key is not to overfill one day with both the hill and timed indoor visits.
Reality check
Choose the funicular, bus, or a walk to reach Buda Hill, then combine trams and walking through the rest of the center. Check BKK for service updates, closures, and ticket conditions.
Allow half a day for Buda Hill, 2–3 hours to walk from the Chain Bridge to Parliament, and half a day for the basilica and Opera area, depending on whether you go inside.
Parliament tours, the basilica lookout, Opera tours and performances, and the thermal bath each have separate admission or ticket costs. Limiting paid visits to one per area can reduce waits and travel time.
Avoid unlicensed currency exchange and taxi touts. At night by the river, watch out for dark steps and bike lanes.
If plans change
Take a riverside walk and view the exterior, then use the remaining time to visit either St. Stephen’s Basilica or Central Market Hall.
Move Buda Hill to the next morning and choose one indoor visit in Pest: the basilica, the Opera, or the thermal bath.
Small tip
The riverfront is pleasant to walk after sunset, but Shoes on the Danube Bank is a memorial, not a nighttime attraction. Pause briefly to read about its meaning, and be considerate of other visitors and people using the walkway.
Final check before departure
- Check visit-day notices for reservations, worship services, and performances at Parliament, the basilica, and the Opera.
- Save the service information for the funicular and buses to Buda Hill, along with an alternative walking route.
- Check the last tram and metro departures for your return to your accommodation after a walk along the Danube.
Check official information for your visit date for Parliament, the basilica, and Opera hours and booking requirements, as well as ways to reach Buda Hill. These area groupings are meant to help you plan an easy route; they do not indicate fixed admission times.
