Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Take the suburban train from Budapest to Szentendre. As soon as you arrive, save two return train options and note where to board.
Choose just one museum that’s open near the main square, then head downhill through the lanes. Set aside 4–5 hours for lunch and a stroll along the Danube.
Plan to return by suburban rail rather than relying on a seasonal cruise. Get back before sunset and enjoy Budapest’s night views from a riverfront near your accommodation.
History and context
Szentendre is a nearby Hungarian town where the river, hills, and small squares come together.
The Serbian community and traces of Baroque architecture give the town its color.

Budapest Google MapsHow to fit it in
If you’re staying in Budapest for 3 nights and 4 days or more, a day in Szentendre can make your city trip feel less packed.
Reality check
Board the H5 suburban train toward Szentendre at Batthyány tér in Budapest. Allow about 40 minutes each way, then walk about 10–15 minutes from the terminus to the Old Town and riverfront. Budapest city tickets are valid only as far as the city boundary at Békásmegyer, so you’ll need an additional ticket for the out-of-city section. At a ticket machine, select your departure station, Szentendre, and your city pass if you have one, or check with the ticket office. For the return, take a train from Szentendre to Batthyány tér.
Spend 4–5 hours locally on the Old Town, one small museum, and lunch by the river. Allow 6–7 hours from leaving your accommodation to returning, including round-trip rail travel and station access. Set aside 60–90 minutes for the museum and 60 minutes for lunch, then use the remaining time to stroll through the lanes.
Even if you have a city pass, don’t forget the additional out-of-city ticket for the round trip. Check BKK’s official fare table for the HÉV suburban 15 km ticket to confirm the section you need. For a sample budget that allocates 8,000 Ft for food and drinks, add the round-trip additional ticket and the actual admission fee for your chosen museum. 8,000 Ft is an example of a personal spending limit, not a restaurant price.
The cobbled streets and hills can be slippery in the rain. Decide in advance when you’ll head back from the riverfront in the evening.
If plans change
Instead of searching for another pier, take the suburban train you saved earlier and spend the evening by the river in Budapest.
Instead of waiting outside closed doors, spend time around the Baroque square, church exteriors, and riverfront, then return one train earlier than planned.
Small tip
It’s easy to spend half a day in the souvenir lanes. Set aside separate time for a riverside stroll.
Final check before departure
- Check the boarding and departure details for the suburban rail journey.
- Save the museums’ opening hours and closure days, whether exhibits require reservations, and the travel time to the riverfront.
- Check the last available transport back to your accommodation after enjoying Budapest’s night views.
Plan to travel to and from Szentendre on the H5 suburban train. Consider a cruise only if official schedules confirm it’s running on your travel date. Choose just one museum, then decide on your return train first.
