At a glance
- On Day 1, walk from Lucerne station to Chapel Bridge, the Old Town, and the lakeside, then stay overnight in Lucerne. If you arrive late, do not add a boat cruise or a round trip to a mountain.
- Day 2 is for traveling from Lucerne through Interlaken Ost to Grindelwald. Drop off your bags, walk around the village, and stay at the same accommodation for two nights.
- On Day 3, choose either First or Jungfraujoch. Check the operating status of gondolas, trains, and hiking trails separately, and do not try to fit two viewpoints into one day.
- The morning of Day 4 gives you time for a second try if you missed the views the day before. But if you have an early departure or long-distance trip that day, skip the second try and head straight out. If you need a full buffer day for the mountains, add another night in Grindelwald.
- Mount Rigi is not included in this basic 4-day itinerary. It is an option if you can add a day in Lucerne; first decide whether you are willing to shorten your mountain time in Grindelwald to fit it in.

Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Arrive in Lucerne → Chapel Bridge → lakeside walk → overnight in Lucerne
Travel from Lucerne through Interlaken to Grindelwald → walk around the village → overnight in Grindelwald
On the day with the best weather, visit either First or Jungfraujoch → second night at the same accommodation
If you missed the views on Day 3, make an early second attempt before departing; otherwise, take a low-altitude walk in Lauterbrunnen or head straight to your next city
History and context
Travel in the Swiss Alps shows how railways and cable cars have transformed the experience of nature.
Lucerne brings together the image of a medieval bridge, a lake, and a gateway to the mountains.

Lauterbrunnen Google MapsHow to fit it in
On a first trip to Switzerland, keeping a weather buffer for the mountains matters more than adding another city.
Reality check
Train transfers are part of the Swiss travel experience, so plan around the train from Lucerne through Interlaken and up to the mountain village.
During your four days, set aside one day during your two-night stay in Grindelwald as your priority day for mountain views, and leave the final morning as a short second-chance window. Add more days if you want to include both a mountain round trip from Lucerne and Mürren.
Mountain railway and cable car fares are the biggest expenses, so compare passes after your itinerary is set.
It can be cold on the mountain even in summer, and the weather can change quickly. Bring a warm layer and stay on marked hiking trails.
If plans change
Plan a lower-altitude day with a boat trip on the Interlaken lakes or a visit to Lucerne’s Old Town and Swiss Museum of Transport.
Add a night in Interlaken between Lucerne and Grindelwald, and cut plans for two mountain attractions in one day down to one.
Small tip
Compare passes after your itinerary is set. Buying one based on its name alone can throw off your budget with seat reservations and extra cable car fares.
Final check before departure
- Check for route works and crowded trains with Swiss Federal Railways (SBB).
- Check mountain attraction webcams and operating status before buying tickets.
- Check hotel check-in and luggage storage hours.
Mountain railway and gondola service is separate from hiking trail access. Check the Jungfrau official operating status for the route you plan to ride and the trail you plan to hike. Check operating hours for the last uphill and downhill departures before buying tickets. Plan your time on the mountain backward from the descent so you do not miss the last ride down. A second attempt on the final day is only possible if you have enough time before your next connection.
