Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

Day 1 · Salzburg

Visit the Old Town and either Mozart’s Birthplace or Mirabell Gardens, then spend the night in Salzburg.

Day 2 · Fortress and city center

Visit Hohensalzburg Fortress and the cathedral, then spend a second night in Salzburg. Recheck the round-trip connections to Hallstatt the day before.

Day 3 · Hallstatt or departure

Visit Hallstatt by morning train and boat, and see the village only if you have an extra night or a late train to your next city and the round-trip connections are confirmed. Choose your target boat and train based on returning to Salzburg station at least 2 hours before your onward train, and allow time to collect your bags. Skip the salt mine. If you’re flying out or catching an early train that day, stay in Salzburg.

If the salt mine is a priority

Add a day or stay overnight in Hallstatt, and check Salzwelten’s tickets and opening hours for your visit date. The official reopening date in 2026 is August 29; don’t mistake earlier construction closure information for current operating status. Allow separate time for the mine, funicular, and Skywalk, in addition to your village walk.

Food and restaurants

  • Try dessert and a beer hall in Salzburg, and a meal with lake views in Hallstatt.
  • Small towns have fewer restaurant choices, so it’s a good idea to check dinner reservations in advance.

Augustiner Bräu Mülln

How to fit it in

After visiting Vienna, spend two days in Salzburg and one in Hallstatt to see the Alps and a lakeside village.

Reality check

Transport

For Hallstatt, search ÖBB for trains from Salzburg Hbf via Attnang-Puchheim to Hallstatt Bahnhof. From the station landing, take a boat to Hallstatt Markt. The railway station is across the lake from the village, so arriving by train alone won’t get you to the center. Coordinate the round-trip station-to-village boat with your return train to Salzburg using Hallstättersee Schifffahrt.

Time

Choose a Hallstatt round trip on day three only if you have an extra night in Salzburg or a late train to your next city. Allow about 6 hours for round-trip transport, plus 2–3 hours in the village, time to collect your bags, and the walk to the station. Plan to be back at Salzburg Hbf at least 2 hours before your onward train; allow more if your accommodation is farther away. This buffer doesn’t guarantee your connection, so also check the change conditions for separate tickets you could miss if there’s a delay. If you’re flying out that day, skip Hallstatt, collect your bags in Salzburg, and head to the airport.

Cost

For the basic itinerary, add up entry to Salzburg Fortress, round-trip trains between Salzburg and Hallstatt, the round-trip boat between the station and village, two nights of lodging, and meals. The salt mine, funicular, and Skywalk are optional extras for an itinerary with an added day. Check the official sales pages to see what each ticket includes. For one adult, note the final ÖBB round-trip train fare for your visit date, the round-trip boat fare, and whether the fortress ticket includes a round-trip funicular ride. If the funicular is included in the fortress ticket, don’t add it separately. Divide the total room price by the number of people traveling together, then calculate the cost for two nights.

Safety

The Hallstatt lakeside and viewpoints can be narrow and crowded. Don’t step backward to take a photo, and check your surroundings first.

If plans change

If the Hallstatt bus or boat connection fails

Before setting out, if the round-trip boat and train times don’t line up, stay in Salzburg and visit the fortress or a museum. If you’ve already arrived at Hallstatt Bahnhof and the boat isn’t running, don’t try to walk around the lake; check ÖBB for a return train and connections from the station you’re at. If you’re in the village, ask the operator about current overland alternatives from your location, and prioritize getting back to your accommodation.

If the salt mine is closed

Don’t go up in bad weather just for the viewpoint. Keep your plans to the lakeside and village museum.

Small tip

Hallstatt gets crowded with day-trippers during the day. If possible, arrive early.

Final check before departure

  • For your Hallstatt day, save the ÖBB train and station-to-village boat connections first, and check the return options too. Leave your bags at your Salzburg accommodation only if it has agreed to store them. The day before, check when you can collect them and how long it takes to get to the station.
  • If you add the salt mine or Skywalk, check the funicular schedule, what each ticket includes, and the final descent time. Either attraction requires time to reach the mountain, so plan it separately from the basic village round trip.
  • In Salzburg, leave time for the fortress visit and dinner reservation separately.

Check the Hallstatt station-to-village boat and your return train to Salzburg as one connection. According to its official visitor information, Salzwelten Hallstatt reopened on August 29, 2026. If you add the salt mine, check opening times and tickets for your visit date separately; don’t assume it fits into the basic village round trip.
