At a glance
- Don’t try to visit both lakes and the city highlights in one day
- Plan the Old Town and Hohensalzburg Fortress first, then fit Mirabell and music venues around them.
- After visiting either St. Gilgen or Hallstatt, leave enough time to get back to your accommodation.
- If it rains, swap the lake for a museum, cathedral, or concert venue
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
Cross the river from Mirabell, walk through the Old Town and up to Hohensalzburg Fortress, and avoid retracing the same riverside route that evening.
Spend the day in St. Gilgen and around Wolfgangsee. If you take a boat, check the arrival in St. Wolfgang and the bus back to Salzburg in reverse order.
Take a day trip to Germany only if the Königssee boat schedule for your visit date lines up with the last return connection. If it doesn’t, stay in Salzburg.
Places and meals

Google MapsHow to fit it in
This works for an itinerary of at least 3 nights if you want to spend more time on lake and mountain scenery than in central Salzburg.
Reality check
For your Königssee day in Germany, check the tourism office’s current 840 timetable for Salzburg Hauptbahnhof→Berchtesgaden ZOB→Königssee. Confirm that your chosen 840 service continues to the lake. If it ends at the ZOB, match it with an actual connection to Königssee, such as route 841, in the same official search. Allow extra time after the bus arrives for the boat queue and tickets, and choose a boat that leaves time to catch your return bus. For Wolfgangsee, check the separate Austrian bus and boat services; don’t combine both lakes in one day.
Set aside separate days for Salzburg city, Austria’s lake region, and Germany’s Königssee.
Compare a regional pass with individual tickets only if you plan to use the fortress, Kaiser Villa, and boats.
The lakes and mountains are cooler than the city, and boats may be canceled. Bring a light waterproof layer and plan an alternative route on land.
If plans change
If it rains, swap the lake for a museum, cathedral, or concert venue
If mountain transport is closed, take a Wolfgangsee boat or stay in the city
Small tip
Don’t try to combine Fuschlsee and Königssee in one day. If it rains, rearrange your plans for Salzburg’s museums and cafés in Bad Ischl.
Final check before departure
- Check the official Hohensalzburg Fortress visitor page for opening hours and ticket terms on your visit date.
- Check the official timetable for Wolfgangsee boat service on your visit date and connections between St. Gilgen and St. Wolfgang.
- Check both the Königssee boat service and round-trip transport across the border. Keep Salzburg city as an alternative in case of rain or strong winds.
- For your day trip to Germany, save your ID and border travel documents, as well as the 840 departure stop, transfer at Berchtesgaden ZOB, and round-trip connection to Königssee.
Check the official visitor pages for Hohensalzburg Fortress and lake transport for opening and service on your visit date. Don’t include both lakes in one day; choose one and plan to return earlier than the last service.
