At a glance

  • Allow extra time for bus transfers between the two lake areas.
  • An overnight stay and an early morning are better than a crowded day trip to Hallstatt.
  • The salt mine and viewpoints are affected by weather and maintenance.
  • Follow drone and private property rules by the lake.

Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

Day 1 · Gosau

Plan this for a day when you won’t change accommodations. In the morning, check ÖBB routes and bus operating days, then save the round-trip connections for the Gosausee stop. Stick to the lower lakeside path. If the return bus is late or the connection is tight, shorten your walk and return to your reserved base accommodation before dark.

Day 1 evening

Return to your accommodation in Hallstatt or Bad Ischl/Bad Goisern and rest. If you’re staying in Hallstatt, keep your evening stroll around town short and do it after checking in. Check in advance how to get your luggage from the pier across from the station to your accommodation.

Day 2

See Hallstatt village in the morning. Add either the salt mine or the Skywalk only if official operating notices confirm it’s open. The train station is across the lake, so check both the ferry departure times and train connections for your outbound and return trips. Save your return boarding point so you don’t confuse it with the bus departure point.

How to fit it in

A good fit for travelers who want to take their time enjoying the mountains and lakes of the Salzkammergut.

Reality check

Transport

Search ÖBB for round trips, distinguishing the exact destination names, such as Gosausee, Hallstatt Lahn, and Hallstatt Bahnhof (station and pier). The Gosausee bus stop and the ferry at Hallstatt station are not the same stop, so save transfer points on a map and return on a service before the last connection of the day. If driving, check the parking lot location and an alternative in case it’s full.

Time

Allow at least half a day for the Gosausee bus rides, transfers, and walk, and half a day for a stroll around Hallstatt village. If you miss the return connection on either day, the wait for an alternative may be long, so decide in advance when to end your walk.

Cost

Operating hours and access at the salt mine and Skywalk can change, so check official notices before paying.

Safety

Lakeside paths and trails are slippery after rain. If the weather turns bad, switch to indoor museums and a Bad Ischl itinerary.

If plans change

If the mountains are obscured

Skip the cable car and focus on the low-level Lake Gosau walk and the Hallstatt Museum and village.

If bus connections are uncertain

Choose only Gosau or Hallstatt, whichever is closer to your accommodation, to avoid the risk of missing the last connection back.

Small tip

If using public transportation, stay near the sights instead of making round trips from Salzburg to both places every day. With one night, arrive early on the first morning and leave the following afternoon; for a more relaxed pace, stay two nights at the same accommodation. In Hallstatt, check luggage arrangements and the connection to the pier. In Bad Ischl or Bad Goisern, check bus and train transfers and the last return connection.

Final check before departure

  • For your visit date, search the full route in ÖBB from your starting point to Gosausee, Hallstatt Lahn or Hallstatt Markt, and your final return destination.
  • On Day 1, save a departure from Gosau that’s one connection earlier than the last one.
  • Check the salt mine and Skywalk’s operation, entry times, and estimated visit duration on their official pages.
  • Bring waterproof and warm layers for rain and low temperatures.

Bus, boat, and salt mine hours and reservations vary by season and weather. Check Austrian Federal Railways (ÖBB) and official attraction notices the day before. If service is suspended, use the alternatives below.
