At a glance
- Do not try to visit both the main island and two other islands in one day.
- Crowded water buses and waits at the docks can take longer than walking.
- During acqua alta, low-lying routes are the first to close.
- The number of bridges you need to cross to reach your accommodation and the number of stairs you need to climb there determine how difficult it will be to move your luggage.
Day by day
Suggested itinerary
See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.
You can walk around St. Mark’s Square itself without a reservation. If you plan to visit the interior of the basilica or Doge’s Palace, go early and time your visit to your reservation. In the afternoon, connect the Cannaregio and Ghetto areas, and check the number of bridges to your accommodation.
At the Fondamente Nove landing, check which pier ACTV Line 12 uses on your travel date. If you choose Murano, plan about 10 minutes direct to Murano Faro and 1–2 hours to walk around the island. If you choose Burano, plan about 40–50 minutes on the same Line 12 service to Burano and 2–3 hours to walk around the island. Some services use different stops and piers, so save the actual outbound and return services and the last service back to the main island first. If there is a high-tide warning or the return connections are poor, skip the islands and choose a walk around the main island instead.
Link Rialto and Dorsoduro on foot. On your departure day, set aside time to move your bags from your lodging to the train station.
History and context
Venice grew into a city-state through maritime trade and commerce with the East.
The city’s layout, where bridges, canals, and boats are part of everyday travel, is central to the experience.
Places and meals
Avoiding the crowds lets you see Venice’s most famous sights at a much calmer pace.
Google MapsA walk through lived-in lanes is more rewarding than staying in the busiest tourist areas.
Google MapsTake a vaporetto to see the city’s waterfront from the water.
Google MapsFood and restaurants
- Choosing just one or two cicchetti bars for a light meal can help cut high food costs.
- Check the menu first at places with high prices and table charges.

Venice Google MapsHow to fit it in
Rather than passing through Venice in a single day, stay for at least two nights to see how it feels in the morning and at night.
Reality check
Vaporettos serve as both transportation and sightseeing, so save the nearest stop to your lodging first.
Avoid the busiest hours around St. Mark’s. In the middle of the day, switch to the lanes or an indoor art museum.
Plan walking days and vaporetto days separately. Write down the planned number of rides for island round trips and city travel, then compare the total cost of single tickets with a 24-hour pass for the same dates. A single ticket is valid for 75 minutes from first validation; a 24-hour pass is valid for 24 hours from first validation. Tap your ticket on the reader before boarding and when transferring to a different boat. Check fares and pass coverage on ACTV's sales page for your visit date, and add meal costs separately.
It is easy to get lost in narrow lanes, so save a route back to your lodging before going out at night.
If plans change
Check the city’s tide and flooding advisories and the actual conditions on routes around your accommodation. Put off visits to low-lying squares and travel between islands, and choose only indoor churches and museums confirmed to be accessible. Do not assume that all of Cannaregio is free of flooding.
Skip the islands and explore Cannaregio and Dorsoduro on the main island on foot.
Small tip
With many bridges and narrow lanes, moving a large suitcase can be tiring. Check your lodging’s location and route from your arrival point first.
Final check before departure
- Check route works and the last boat with ACTV.
- Check the City of Venice tide forecast.
- Check the number of bridges and stairs to your lodging on the map.
- If you plan to visit the glass or lace museums in Murano or Burano, check their hours and closure days separately. Even on a day spent just walking around an island, leave enough time to catch the last boat back to your lodging on the main island. Do not assume visits to the two islands will be the same in scope.
Vaporetto routes and service, as well as tides, may change by date. Check routes and the last boat with ACTV, and check alerts with the City of Venice tide service before planning your island visits and St. Mark’s visit.
