At a glance

  • Photographing the room's condition as soon as you enter creates a record to help explain its state at that time. It is not a test for detecting cameras.
  • Even if you see an unfamiliar fixture or hard-to-explain wiring facing the bed, bathroom, or changing area, don't take it apart. If you feel uneasy or someone is nearby, leaving the room comes before documenting anything.
  • Flashlight reflections, phone cameras, Wi-Fi device names, and detection apps can produce false positives and false negatives. Seeing nothing does not confirm that the room is safe.
  • After moving somewhere safe, record the room number, time of discovery, and location of the fixture. Follow local police instructions first, and also file a report with the accommodation or booking platform.

Document the room's condition

You can photograph the visible condition of the room before unpacking. This is a record to help explain the situation later, not a detection procedure.

If you're uneasy, leave the room first

If you see an unfamiliar fixture or feel that someone may break in, go immediately to a place with other people, such as the lobby. Don't stay alone to inspect a device.

Don't use basic tools to decide whether the room is safe

Flashlights, infrared reactions, Wi-Fi lists, and detection apps may miss cameras or wrongly flag ordinary devices.

Preserve evidence according to police instructions

From a safe distance, record the room number, time, location, and surroundings. Follow local police instructions on handling the device and taking any additional photos, and keep your platform report number.

Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

Immediately after arrival

Check the door locks and emergency exit locations, and briefly document the visible condition of the room before unpacking.

If you see an unfamiliar fixture

If you're in danger or feel uneasy, move immediately to a safe place outside the room. From a safe distance, record the room number, time, and location of the fixture.

If you suspect an invasion of privacy

Report it to local police and ask how to preserve evidence, then create a record with the accommodation and booking platform too. If images have been shared, also seek help from a victim support organization in the country you're visiting.

How to fit it in

Check once before opening your suitcase just after check-in, and once before using the bathroom. There's no need to forcefully remove ordinary fixtures; just look at what you can see without taking anything apart.

Reality check

Transport

When you enter the room, also check the door locks, emergency exit locations, and how to contact the front desk. If you're uneasy, go somewhere with other people, such as the lobby, rather than continuing to check alone.

Time

Keep the check brief, around 3 minutes. You don't need to dismantle the room or keep searching throughout your trip in an attempt to detect everything.

Cost

Free detection apps may only list device names visible on Wi-Fi. They may not detect wired or offline devices, and may flag ordinary devices as suspicious, so don't draw conclusions from the app alone.

Safety

If you're in immediate danger, leave the room before documenting anything and call the local emergency number. Only photograph the fixture and its surroundings if it's safe to do so, and follow local police instructions on whether to touch or remove the device. In an emergency in South Korea, call 112.

If plans change

If you find a suspicious device

Don't touch or dismantle the device. Move to a safe place outside the room and report it to the person in charge of the accommodation and local police.

If you're unsure but feel uneasy

Don't rely on a detection app to draw a conclusion. Ask to change rooms or move to different accommodation, and keep a record with the booking platform.

Small tip

The claim that a mirror with no gap when you touch it with a finger is a two-way mirror that lets someone look into the room is not a reliable way to tell. The gap can vary depending on how the mirror is made. If the installation seems unusual or you suspect there is space behind it, don't remove it yourself; ask staff to check.

Final check before departure

  • Save the booking platform's accommodation issue reporting process and the local emergency number.
  • Limit room checks to briefly documenting what is visible; don't treat them as a detection method.
  • If you suspect an invasion of privacy, move to a safe place outside the room before taking photos.

The results of a basic check vary depending on the phone model, camera connection method, and room lighting. Flashlights, phone cameras, Wi-Fi lists, and detection apps do not replace professional detection or investigation, and do not prove that a room is safe.
