At a glance

  • First decide whether you’re starting from Sapporo or Asahikawa, then compare a rental car with scheduled sightseeing buses.
  • Parking and traffic get worse at the peak of lavender season, so limit midday driving.
  • Follow the rules for photographing Biei’s farmland and private property. Stay on designated paths.
  • Bloom times vary from year to year, and photo spots can be far apart. Even if you save lots of map pins, there’s a limit to how many places you can visit safely in one day.
  • For a day by car, limit the itinerary to one flower field in Furano, one viewpoint in Biei, and either Aoiike or one stop in the Shirogane area. Adding more places among the fields, hills, and pond can mean spending more time driving and parking than visiting. As planning estimates, allow 1–2 hours at a flower field in the morning, one hour for lunch, and half a day for two afternoon stops and travel. Drop the last stop if blooms or traffic conditions warrant it.
  • Without a car, the train to Furano or Biei is only part of the journey; local transport to each attraction is separate. Don’t assume you can walk to every distant hill from the station. Compare reserved sightseeing buses or small-group tours that include your preferred starting point and stops. If you’re using public transport only, stick to either the Furano flower-field area or the Biei–Shirogane area to simplify your return trip.
  • Biei’s hills are private farmland where crops are grown. Don’t enter fields for photos or stop your car on narrow farm roads; use official parking lots and viewing areas. If there’s no safe parking lot near a spot you’ve pinned, leave it out. If you choose to cycle, consider the hills, heat, and rain, and keep to a short route that gets you back before the rental shop closes.

Day by day

Suggested itinerary

See each day's route, highlights, background and stay together in one place.

08:00~11:30

Start from Furano or Asahikawa, visit one flower field with official parking first, and move on before peak-season traffic builds.

12:00~16:00

After lunch in Biei, choose one viewpoint on the Patchwork Road and either Aoiike or one stop in the Shirogane area.

After 16:00

Head back toward your accommodation without adding stops on farm roads, then refuel and check road conditions for the next day.

How to fit it in

Add this to a summer trip in Hokkaido if you want to see flower fields and rural scenery. Choose just three places where you can get out and walk instead of driving from one photo spot to the next.

Reality check

Transport

Choose a base—Asahikawa Airport, Sapporo, or Furano—and compare a rental car with sightseeing buses. Check where you can stop on Biei’s farm roads.

Time

Trying to photograph lots of flower fields and hills can turn the day into one long series of transfers. Keep it to one lavender field, one Biei viewpoint, and one rest stop.

Cost

Budget separately for the rental car, fuel, parking, farm admissions and activities, and accommodation. During peak lavender season, rooms and rental cars book up quickly.

Safety

Most farmland is also someone’s home and workplace. Don’t enter private property or stop in the middle of the road. Drivers should focus on the road before the scenery.

If plans change

If rental cars and sightseeing buses are fully booked

Choose one area that you can reach by train and actual local bus service. Only plan to tour all of Furano and Biei by taxi on the spur of the moment if you’ve checked the total fare and how you’ll get back.

If it rains or the flowers aren’t blooming as expected

Cut the hill-viewing route and switch to one open café or indoor exhibit in town. Don’t keep driving along farm roads to search for a field with different blooms.

Small tip

The fields are someone’s workplace, not tourist attractions. Use official parking and take photos from outside restricted areas.

Final check before departure

  • Confirm your accommodation base, rental car or sightseeing bus booking, and return train connection.
  • Check each farm’s flowering conditions, hours, parking, and rules about entering farmland.
  • Check Aoiike access and parking notices, confirm the bike return deadline, and prepare a bad-weather alternative.

Flowering conditions, parking restrictions on farm roads, and sightseeing bus operating days vary in Furano and Biei. Check the tourism associations’ flower and transportation updates.
